Project Spotlight | The Magari Garden

Rooted in contrast and composition, The Magari Garden draws inspiration from the formal landscapes of Villa Farnese, balancing structure and softness through sculptural plantings, architectural forms, and layered negative space. Tailored poolside furnishings and intimate lounge areas bring a sense of understated glamour, designed for both gathering and retreat.

Beyond the structured garden, the landscape softens into a woodland setting where ferns, grasses, and mature trees frame quieter moments around a fire feature and suspended daybed, creating an immersive escape that is both refined and deeply restorative.

Working with what already exists requires a different kind of discipline: knowing what to preserve, what to refine, and where to intervene.

That approach shaped our work at The Lakeside Retreat, where we built on an existing foundation and introduced new layers that bring clarity and continuity without disrupting what was already working. The space now feels more resolved, more connected, and fully in step with the home and its surroundings.

Less about transformation, more about resolution.

For the 2023 Kips Bay Dallas Show House, the vision took shape as The Garden Arrival. Centered around a sculptural focal point, a structured hedge creates a sense of enclosure, allowing the piece to be experienced from multiple vantage points. Layered planting and gathering spaces extend that moment outward, shaping a sequence that is both immersive and composed.

Each decision was carefully calibrated to create a landscape that is intentional, cohesive, and fully resolved, reflecting how we shape our work at Melissa Gerstle Design.

You’re not just getting a garden, you’re gaining a space that evolves with how you live. 🌿✨

The success of a landscape is rarely defined by a single gesture; it’s built through a series of decisions that guide how the space is lived in.

At The Lakeside Retreat, those decisions shape a rhythm of gathering, retreat, and quiet moments throughout the garden. Each element works in relation to the next, creating a space that is composed, intuitive, and entirely at ease.

If you’re thinking about how your outdoor space could work more seamlessly, we’d love to begin the conversation.

Defined by low profiles and extended lines, this outdoor seating arrangement creates a sense of openness that settles naturally into the landscape. The sectional forms a continuous edge, while layered textures from the woven rug to the softened cushions add depth without excess.

The earlier landscape designers are brought into the process, the more aligned the result becomes. Architecture, interiors, and landscape are developed together, allowing each decision to inform the next.

A structure alone doesn’t create a place—the landscape does.
Here, the architecture is grounded through columns, axial movement, and layered planting—transforming a secondary structure into a destination within the landscape.

What once felt like a leftover space now reads as intentional, connected, and complete.
