I was so honored to be a part of the Oak Cliff Art Walk this past weekend. Major kudos to Haley with and Reyna from Cima Arts - displaying work from 300 artists is a major undertaking, and it was a great event. I so admire the work they’re doing to support artists in Dallas!

Sam’s BBQ in east Austin is holding on in the face of rampant gentrification. If you Google Sam’s bbq there is a great Texas Monthly article about the family business. From another article - “I’ve got love for this community,” he told KXAN in 2019. “If you’ve been in business 43 years in the community, you gotta love that community because they have supported you for years. You can’t just give up on them. You can’t just walk out on them.” Preservation is about more than just architecture!

A reminder that after the state fair is over is a great time to visit Fair Park! Fair Park has an outstanding collection of Art Deco buildings that are best admired without the fair banners. This is the Woofus, outside the swine building

I always admire the neon on this building! I have heard various stories of what actually goes on inside, but it doesn’t seem to be a hotel. East Dallas

Akard Street in the Cedars. It would be nice if we could build some of the new construction in the style of this building!

The building from my previous post. With the roof shape and the wall of windows I think this building has great bones!

On Ross Ave. This actually had a pretty good antique store in it until not too long ago. I’ll share the building in a separate post next.
