Imagine you’re lying in bed in the middle of the night when you hear glass shatter somewhere in your house. Which response would make you feel safer?

Your partner gets up, tells you to stay where you are, call 911, and they’ll go check it out. Or…your partner rolls over, gives you a hug, and repeatedly tells you, “It’s okay.”

Most of us would choose the first option. Not because we don’t want comfort, but because in moments of uncertainty, we need information more than affection. Dogs are no different.

When your dog is unsure about something, our instinct is often to comfort them. We pet them, talk sweetly to them, and reassure them that everything is okay.

The problem is that we have information they don’t. We know the thunderstorm isn’t dangerous. We know the stranger walking by isn’t a threat. We know the vacuum cleaner isn’t going to attack them. Our dog doesn’t know any of that.

So when we offer affection without direction, we’re often providing comfort without clarity. Direction, on the other hand, gives your dog information.

A clear expectation.
A job to focus on.
A leader worth following.

Direction communicates, “I’ve assessed the situation. I’ve got this. Here’s what we’re going to do.” And that’s what creates safety.

Affection has its place. But when your dog is struggling with uncertainty, direction is often the more loving choice. Because direction is affection with a purpose.

Testimonial Tuesday!

Four years ago today, we opened Mirror Image K9 Behavior Center. We had our first day of Day Camp. We held our first sessions at the center.

Four years ago, we began the most amazing journey.

Over the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible humans and dogs. I’ve watched relationships grow, obstacles be overcome, new skills be learned, and opportunities open up for both dogs and their humans. Not only have I seen relationships grow, we’ve been able to witness the very beginning of them. Working with and helping so many dogs find their perfect families has been the honor of a lifetime.

I’ve also somehow found myself connecting with dog owners all over the country. I’ve watched a community form made up of people who have never met in real life, yet are always there to support one another. (Shoutout MIK9 Extended members!) We’ve had people travel from all over the country to learn from us, and that still blows my mind. I never could have imagined this career would allow me to work with so many amazing people and their dogs who live nowhere near me.

And last, but nowhere near least, I’ve watched my team exceed every expectation I ever had for them and then some. The quality of trainers they are still impresses me every single day. The way they show up for their clients, their dogs, and each other makes me so incredibly proud to know them, and even prouder to be part of the same team.

To all of you who have supported us, thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it. You’ve helped make my dreams come true, and I can’t wait to keep living them every single day.

Seven Best Chance dogs in the pack today. Seven out of almost 100 dogs that the has rescued and re-homed over the past few years.

Each of these dogs had a different journey to finding us and to finding their forever homes. One of them (Lasso, second to the right), is still waiting on his forever home.

We are so grateful for the part we get to play in each dog’s journey. And we’re even more grateful when we get to continue working with these dogs after they’ve found their families.
