Ten years ago today, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its final report and 94 Calls to Action. It was a historic and emotional moment — and one Emdash was honoured to support as the communications and media relations team for the TRC. A decade later, we reflect on the truths shared, the commitments made, and the work that remains. Reconciliation is not a single event but a shared and ongoing responsibility.
In December 2023, the Yellowhead Institute published a status update report on the progress of implementing the 94 Calls to Action. Since the report was published only one additional Call to Action has been completed.
That's 14 in 10 years. At this abysmal rate, Indigenous peoples will have to wait decades for reconciliation.
What can you do? Well, one of the challenges to reconciliation is apathy. So long as our government believes the public don't care, they won't feel pressured to do the work needed to implement the remaining Calls to Action.
Caring looks like showing up to community events on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in September rather than treating it as another day off.
Caring looks like learning about the Treaties and Indigenous people who have lived on the lands you call home for millennia.
We are all Treaty people.
Slides 2, 3, and 4 are from the Yellowhead Institute's report "Calls to Action Accountability: A 2023 Status Update on Reconciliation". Read the full report ->https://yellowheadinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/YI-TRC-C2A-2023-Special-Report-compressed.pdf

Empathy isn't a checkbox.
It’s a practice that should be embedded into every step of your communications efforts — especially when working with communities that have been historically pushed aside.
When the stakes are high and the issues are complex, leading with empathy isn’t just important — it’s essential. It helps build trust, create deeper community relationships, and advocate effectively for meaningful change.
We’ve put together a free handbook to help your organization communicate with care, consideration, and impact. Download it here:
