# # # **The Garden of Surrender**

**Scripture:**
*"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."* — Luke 22:42 (NIV)

**Reflection:**
The Garden of Gethsemane represents one of the most intensely human moments in Jesus’ life. Often, we think of Jesus as unshakeable and fearless, but in the garden, we see Him in deep anguish. He knew the physical torture and spiritual separation that awaited Him on the cross.

So, why did He pray there?

**1. To Be Honest with God**
Jesus didn't hide his emotions. He didn’t put on a brave face for the Father. He admitted that He didn't want to go through with the suffering. This teaches us that it is okay to bring our fears, our doubts, and our "I don't want to do this" moments to God. He can handle our honesty.

**2. To Align His Will**
Jesus prayed until His human desire for self-preservation aligned with His divine purpose of redemption. The prayer didn't change the situation—the cross still happened—but it changed Him. It gave Him the strength to stand up and face the soldiers when they arrived.

**3. To Show Us How to Trust**
The most powerful word in His prayer was "Yet." *Yet not my will, but yours.* True faith isn't just trusting God when things are going well; it is trusting His plan even when the path is dark and painful.

**Application:**
We all have "Gethsemane moments"—times when we face a difficult diagnosis, a broken relationship, or a scary decision. Like Jesus, we should run to the Father. We should be honest about our pain, but ultimately, we pray for the strength to trust His plan over our own.

# # # # The Hustle of the "Holiday Spirit"

If you look around right now, the world is incredibly loud. The department stores are blasting music, our inboxes are flooded with "Last Chance!" sale alerts, and there is a frantic pressure to find the perfect box to put under a tree.

Culturally, we have drifted into a version of Christmas that centers on the "Holiday Spirit." This spirit is often defined by magic, Santa Claus, reindeer, and the temporary dopamine hit of tearing open wrapping paper. While these things can be fun and nostalgic, they are ultimately shallow. The "magic" of Santa fades when we grow up, and the joy of a physical gift often fades by January.

It is very easy to get so caught up in the *production* of Christmas that we miss the *Person* of Christmas.

# # # # The True Gift

The first Christmas wasn't loud. It didn't have shimmering lights or piles of presents. It was gritty, humble, and quiet.

God didn't send a toy to entertain us; He sent a Savior to rescue us.

When we focus too heavily on the commercial side of the holidays, we teach our hearts to hunger for material things. But when we look at the manger, we are reminded that our greatest need wasn't a new gadget or a new outfit—our greatest need was reconciliation with God.

The difference between the "Holiday Spirit" and the "Holy Spirit" is profound:
* **The world says:** "Get more to be happy."
* **The Word says:** "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).
* **Santa offers:** Gifts based on whether you’ve been "naughty or nice."
* **Jesus offers:** Grace and salvation, even though we have all been "naughty" (sinful).

The true meaning of Christmas is that the Creator of the universe humbled Himself to become part of His creation, simply because He loves you.

# # # # A Challenge for the Season

As we count down the days, let’s make a conscious effort to dethrone the commercialism and put the King back on the throne.

**1. Presence Over Presents**
Before you worry about what you are buying for others, worry about your presence with God. Take 10 minutes every morning to sit in silence, read the nativity story, and thank God for the gift of Jesus.

**2. Look for the "Good and Perfect Gift"**
James 1:17 tells us that every good gift comes from above. When you do enjoy a meal, a warm fire, or time with family, acknowledge it immediately as a blessing from God, not just "holiday luck."

**3. Give Grace**
The malls are crowded, traffic is bad, and family gatherings can be stressful. The world reacts with frustration. As a Christian, react with the peace of Christ. The greatest gift you can give your family this year isn't in a box; it is a patient, loving, and Christ-centered attitude.

*Thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. Lord, I confess that I easily get distracted by the shiny things of this world. I get caught up in the stress of shopping and the fantasy of the season, and I forget the miracle of the manger.*

*Help me to slow down. Quiet the noise around me so I can hear Your voice. Remind me that the best gift didn't come wrapped in fancy paper, but in swaddling cloths. Help me to carry the light of Jesus into this dark world, valuing salvation over stuff and Your presence over presents.*
