So many of us have paused to read the poignant poem, "On Saying Farewell to Culver," so visible on a boulder not far from the Legion Memorial Building on Culver's campus near lake side. If you've looked more closely at the information on its author, you'll note that the 19-year-old First Classman died just over 95 years ago, almost to the day, on May 17, 1931.
John Lewis Adams died of pneumonia just weeks before he would have graduated from Culver, as you can read in these articles from the Vedette newspaper of the day (and the full source reference here: https://cdm17320.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/vedette/id/15128/rec/3).
Here, also, is his Find-a-Grave entry: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/77480821/john-lewis-adams
Thanks to Bill O'Brien CMA '90 whose inquiry inspired this post.

Culver Academies has been feeding hundreds of hungry mouths three times a day, seven days a week from its Dining Hall for more than a century Of the many facets of Culver that make indelible impressions, food — especially for the teenage connoisseur — surely ranks among the most prominent, if for no other reason than its frequency and its ability to evoke shared memories of the sublime or to inspire complaint.

What was Thanksgiving like a century ago at Culver? Pulled from the Culver archives are files from the 1925 Thanksgiving festivities on campus, in those days when travel challenges meant students stayed for the holiday (though with plenty of excitement from football to theater and more). Here's a look, with warm wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving from the Culver archives and museum!

For readers in the Culver area: Culver Academies' Memorial Chapel is one of the sites on the tour...

At 10:30 AM on Saturday, Dec. 6, as part of the town-wide ushering in of the holiday season, the Culver Historical Society will host a driving tour of several historic churches of the Culver area, concluding with a brief Christmas sing-along reception with refreshments provided by Wesley United Methodist Church.

The event will commence at Wesley church, 511 School Street in Culver. A bus will be provided to take attendees to each of the several churches included in the tour, though attendees are also welcome to drive their own vehicles to each site.

Church communities in the Culver area date to the 19th century and include a variety of denominations and styles of worship and architecture. During the event, the Very Rev. Dr. John Houghton and Jeff Kenney, both of the Society, will invite attendees to join them in the sanctuary of each church, where they will present a brief history of the congregation and architecture.

As mentioned, the tour will end back at Wesley United Methodist Church, where all are invited to stay for refreshments and a brief singing of Christmas carols.

All are welcome to this free event. Questions may be directed to [email protected].

Bells chiming the time on Culver’s campus have been music to students’ ears for more than seven decades 10/20/2025

A bit of history regarding a ubiquitous aspect of the 'sound of Culver'....

Bells chiming the time on Culver’s campus have been music to students’ ears for more than seven decades One aspect of Culver that many graduates report missing after they leave the campus — and there are many — is not just the beautiful sights, but perhaps unexpectedly, the sounds as well. Particularly the seemingly omnipresent sound of bells chiming out the hours (and portions of hours) and even ...
