The Sharing Tables

The Sharing Tables are community spaces, literally tables, filled with food, toiletries and cleaning supplies.

Take what you need, and leave what you can, if you can! 💕 In November 2020, after reading a magazine article about a woman in Detroit who had started a “Sharing Table,” Mary Kate Tischler and her 6 year-old daughter Ruby decided to start their own Sharing Table on their front lawn in Seaford. A Sharing Table is a community space, literally a table, filled with food, toiletries and cleaning supplie

s. The items are free to anyone who needs them, with no proof required and no judgments. The motto for The Sharing Tables is: “Take what you need, and leave what you can, if you can.”

Just a few weeks after Mary Kate and Ruby started their Sharing Table, word began to spread through local media and on Facebook, and people started reaching out to Mary Kate asking how they could start their own Sharing Table. Since then, a total of 53 Sharing Tables have opened, most of them on Long Island, one in Poughkeepsie, one near Albany, one near Binghamton, one near Syracuse, and four in Los Angeles. Some of those Sharing Tables have since closed either temporarily or permanently for a variety of reasons, but we still continue to hear from people who want to start Sharing Tables, and our numbers are continuing to grow. One source of growth has been a partnership with Binghamton University’s Alumni Association, which sent an email to more than 90,000 of its alumni asking them to start Sharing Tables. So far, three Binghamton alums have opened Sharing Tables. The Sharing Tables has also partnered with Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), founded in 1977, which benefits and proudly supports more than 4,000 individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental illness and traumatic brain injury. Clients of FREE assist the Sharing Tables with ensuring that donated items are delivered to the various Sharing Tables on Long Island. 💜 FAQs about the Sharing Tables:

Q: Are there any requirements for how much or how often someone can take items from a Sharing Table?

A: No requirements at all! Take what you need and/or leave what you can, if you can!

Q: Do we need to show identification or have a certain income level before we are allowed to take items?

A: Nope! Times are hard for everyone right now, and we have no requirements at all. All we ask is that you take only what you need, and don’t be a jerk - leave enough for other people, too!

Q: What type of items are most needed by people who come to the Sharing Tables?

A: People are most often looking for toiletries, like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, feminine hygiene products, as well as baby diapers and wipes. As for food, peanut butter and jelly are very popular, and so are food mixes such as macaroni and cheese, Knorr’s pasta mixes, and full meals like hearty soups and stews.

Q: If I can’t make it to the Cullman Sharing Table, is there another way to donate?

When we started the day, the table was overflowing with donations and boxes surrounding the table, and now this is all that’s left! Today the Cullman Sharing Table donated a half dozen bags full of food, toiletries and cleaning supplies to the former Cullman Christian School students and their family in the neighboring town of Arab who suffered a devastating house fire several days ago. With the lingering and heartbreaking smell of char in the air, we added our donation bags to the growing mound of donated items being left in the next door neighbor’s driveway. Wishing this family comfort and peace 💜
