The 26th, we had a final merits hearing for a Cuban woman, she had her residency but it was in jeopardy because she committed a stupid crime. The law allows for a waiver if we could show extreme hardship that a deportation would cause her family. We had the wonderful Yanglier Suarez Lopez as our expert witness, licensed in Cuba and Florida and the lady has her green card back after a hardfought victory.
So a client whose family had hired an attorney to represent him but the attorney missed his first hearing and then the client came down with covid, a cover attorney attended the next hearing for bond, waived his presence and was denied bond. We filed the bond appeal, and then appeared at the next hearing filing a motion for a new bond hearing. The judge granted it and Monday we got bond for him. He is so happy!!! It made a huge difference that his cousin was there in the courtroom for him. I wasn’t, as I appeared telephonically because I was still waiting a covid test result.

Exhausted after winning a CAT (Convention Against Torture) case the previous day, Bonnie Smerdon was still able to make it to the Sports Immigration Law Conference 2020 in Orlando to speak about strategies for P-visas, the visas she uses to bring world class jockeys to the United States.
Immigration processes are not like a fast-food drive-thru. The processes are often lengthy, painful and expensive. Patience is always necessary for a good result. However, yesterday was a very good day for us as one client who had done their own paperwork and had gotten stuck outside the US returned to the US yesterday after hiring us to file a waiver and complete the consular processing. Another client for whom we filed a waiver and completed the consular processing picked up the passport and package yesterday that allows the return to the US.
Both clients were brought here as children, living their entire lives in illegal immigration status, living in the shadows trying to live a normal life. After yesterday, both will have the opportunity to live fully and freely in the United States, both deserve it and my paralegal was able to experience why we do what we do.
Ride in Peace Randy Romero!
Haven’t been saying much as we have been getting bonds lately but this was special to my heart. Getting an Ocala exercise rider out.
