FEDERAL HILL IDENTITY CRISIS (article)
Federal Hill, once the beating heart of Rhode Island's Italian American community, now finds itself struggling to regain its formerstruggles luster, dimmed not by a lack of heritage but by a lack of vision. Decades ago, the neighborhood thrived on the aroma of simmering gravy and the vibrant clatter of bocce courts, drawing visitors from across the state to its bakeries, butcher shops, and festive street fairs. Today, however, that energy has been stifled by a glaring lack of cohesive marketing direction, leaving the area's rich history underpromoted and overshadowed by suburban chains. Compounding the issue are persistent safety concerns, whether real or perceived, that keep evening crowds away and discourage new investment. Most frustrating, the neighborhood has fallen into the hands of business owners and organizers who lack the dedication and strategic foresight needed to protect and elevate its legacy. Without a committed, professional approach to branding, security, and community stewardship, Federal Hill risks becoming a relic of its past, remembered more for what it was than what it can still be.

On this radiant June 2nd, as Italy awakens in splendor for the Feast of the Italian Republic, my heart stirs across the ocean.
For 53 years, I have called America home, walking its bustling streets and chasing its bold dreams. Yet every Festa della Repubblica, my soul flies back to the land of my birth. Beneath azure skies, the Tricolore still dances—green as the hills that cradled my childhood, white as the pure hopes of youth, red as the passion that never faded.
In 1946, my people rose from war’s ashes, choosing the Republic with ballots of courage and ballots of light. Today, from my American shore, I march with them in spirit: through Rome’s proud avenues, Tuscan sunlit slopes, and Sicilian shores whispering ancient songs.
I honor the brave who secured our freedom and celebrate Italy’s undying fire—art, resilience, and renewal. Though miles divide us, my heart rests forever where I was born.
Viva l'Italia! My eternal symphony of olive groves, marble dreams, and undying light.
