There’s a side of rodeo that most people never get to see.

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect Podcast, Dr. Dan Carter sits down with Robin Brooks of Southern Rodeo Company to talk about rodeo animal welfare, bucking horse care, stock contractors, breeding champion bucking stock, and the deep respect that rodeo families have for these incredible athletes.

Whether you've been around rodeo your entire life or have only seen it from the grandstands, this conversation offers an honest look at the animals, traditions, and people behind the sport—and why these horses and bulls are cared for as valued athletes, not just competitors.

What is Tenex, and why are more equine veterinarians talking about it?

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect Podcast, Dr. Dan Carter sits down with Dr. Ted Vlahos of Yellowstone Equine Hospital to discuss the Tenex procedure, a minimally invasive treatment used for chronic tendon injuries, ligament injuries, suspensory injuries, and scar tissue removal in horses.

For years, equine sports medicine has focused on managing scar tissue and supporting tendon healing through rehabilitation and regenerative medicine. Tenex takes a different approach by physically removing damaged scar tissue, allowing healthier tissue to fill in and potentially improving long-term soundness and performance.

If you have a horse dealing with a chronic suspensory injury, tendon lesion, ligament damage, or recurring soft tissue injury, this conversation is packed with insight on one of the most exciting advancements in equine lameness treatment and equine rehabilitation.

When a mare starts acting "mare-ish," hormones are usually the first thing blamed. But are they actually the problem?

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect Podcast, Dr. Dan Carter and Dr. Caroline Brown dive into mare behavior problems, the equine estrous cycle, Regumate, ovarian tumors, seasonal cycling, and why many so-called "moody mares" may actually be dealing with pain or other underlying health issues.

One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that many horse owners are quick to blame hormones—and quick to reach for Regumate—when a mare's behavior changes. We discuss the common misconception that every "moody mare" needs Regumate, why long-term hormone manipulation isn't always the answer, and how behavior changes can often be linked to pain, discomfort, or other underlying issues.

What actually makes good horse hay? How much forage does a horse really need? And why are more veterinarians and nutritionists pushing a “forage first” approach to equine nutrition?

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect, Dr. Dan Carter sits down with Sarah Donahue from Standlee for a conversation about horse hay, alfalfa, forage quality, hay cubes, senior horse nutrition, gastric ulcers, digestive health, and feeding horses based on what their bodies are actually designed to consume.

From the “Seed to Feed” process to breaking down common myths around alfalfa and horse nutrition, this episode is packed with practical conversations for horse owners, riders, trainers, and anyone looking to better understand equine forage nutrition and gut health.

There’s a lot more that goes into equine telemedicine and emergency veterinary calls than most horse owners realize. In this episode of *The Equine Vet Connect*, Dr. Dan Carter, Dr. Brown-Fiol, and Dr. Hoffman sit down for a real conversation about equine telehealth, VCPR laws, emergency triage, and why veterinarians sometimes have to say, “we need to physically see the horse.”

From colics and lameness exams to wound care, tele-triage, and the realities of practicing equine veterinary medicine, this episode breaks down how horse vets balance technology, legal responsibilities, and doing what’s truly best for the horse.

A lot of this episode is just an honest conversation about the gray areas horse veterinarians navigate every day, and why some decisions are a lot more complicated than they may seem from the outside. Now out on Spotify. 🎙️

Equine veterinary medicine is so much more than what people see during an appointment, and behind every veterinarian is a team of vet techs and assistants helping hold everything together. Before the day even starts, they’re reading through the schedule, pulling medications, packing trucks with everything the doctors may need, prepping equipment, and taking care of hospitalized horses. From handling horses during lameness exams and emergencies to prepping for surgery, running diagnostics, managing equipment, unloading trailers, restocking supplies, and helping keep both horses and veterinarians safe, they do a hundred different jobs — usually all in the same day — and equine medicine simply wouldn’t function without them.

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect Podcast, Dr. Dan Carter sits down with veterinary assistant, Caroline Butler, for a genuine behind-the-scenes conversation about the long days, the teamwork, the chaos, and the heart behind life inside an equine hospital.
