On June 9, 1772, a British tax ship, the H.M.S Gaspee, ran aground at low tide in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, while chasing a colonial sloop loaded with commercial goods. Tired of being harassed, the colonists decided to revolt by burning the Gaspee later that night--marking the first armed rebellion of the American Revolution more than a year before the Boston Tea Party.
