While that sounds counterintuitive because softwashing involves a multi-step process (applying a chemical mix, letting it sit, and rinsing it off), the math comes down to how the water is being used. Pressure washing is also prone to damaging the vinyl and/or windows of homes.

In a softwash system, the water pressure is often less than 100 PSI. To put that in perspective, a standard garden hose with a spray nozzle usually runs between 40 and 60 PSI, while a pressure washer can exceed 3,000 PSI. Because the pressure is so low, there is almost zero risk of:
• Damaging window seals.
• Chipping paint.
• Forcing water behind siding, which can lead to hidden mold growth.

Softwashing is an "algaecide" treatment, meaning it actually sanitizes the surface so the organisms take much longer to return compared to just rinsing them with water.

To ensure the longevity of your asphalt shingle roof, it is recommended to have it softwashed every 2-5 years. This maintenance routine eliminates organic growth and provides a deep clean without damaging the shingles.
Note that pressure washing is not advisable, as it can/will cause significant damage.
