Speaking of team, we recently sat down with Marcus Jackson and Mike Widen during our NIRSA Live Series to talk about leading the planning, building, and opening of two new facilities. Their conversation is a strong reminder that behind every successful project is a team working in sync.

Advocacy for upgrades and renovations
One of the toughest parts of facilities work is this:
You know what your space needs. Now you have to help others see it too.
Advocating for renovations, upgrades, or new facilities takes more than pointing out problems. It takes vision, strategy, and the ability to connect facility needs to student experience, wellbeing, risk management, and institutional priorities.
That’s why opportunities like the NIRSA Facilities Institute matter.
This is more than a gathering for people who manage buildings. It’s a place for professionals who are trying to make the case for better spaces, better systems, and better support for the communities they serve.
Standard Pass (5/24-7/18)
If you’re working through how to advocate for facility improvements while balancing the everyday demands of operations, this experience is built for that kind of challenge.

NIRSA staff Sierra and Nick recently had the chance to tour the UMKC Campus Recreation department during a NIRSA site visit!
UMKC has a unique setup where athletics and student recreation share several spaces, including fields, courts, and training facilities. During the visit, the team also got to see progress on the installation of a new $1M+ scoreboard on the athletic field.
It was a great visit and an exciting look at how UMKC is creating shared spaces that support both student recreation and athletics.
We’re looking forward to having UMKC on the facility tour schedule for the 2027 NIRSA Conference!

The foundation is being set for something special in collegiate recreation. 🏈
The new NIRSA Club Flag League, developed in partnership with the NFL, is already gaining momentum with commitments from universities across the country from HBCUs to Division I institutions and emerging club programs.
This strong foundation includes programs like University of Central Florida and University of Florida, the two teams that recently competed in the championship game of the inaugural Fiesta Bowl Flag Football Classic, where UCF captured the title with a 19-7 win.
The inaugural NIRSA Club Flag League is designed to elevate competitive opportunities for women in flag football while creating space for student-athletes to compete, lead, and connect nationwide.
From powerhouse programs to emerging teams, this league represents more than competition. It represents opportunity, access, visibility, and the continued growth of one of the fastest-rising sports in the country.
Big things are ahead for NIRSA Play.
