Today is the start of the competition for the National Collegiate Soil Judging Contest, that Oregon State University, Corvallis and Cascades, is hosting in Bend. About 175 students from 21 universities have been studying soil pits around central Oregon this past week. The individual contest is today, in the Sunriver area. Tomorrow the team contest will take place.

This is a view of one of the practice soil pits and its setting. Running this competition has been a major investment of time and effort, yet very inspiring for my series of Oregon soil paintings!
