Today we celebrate International Women's in Engineering Day. Currently, in Oregon, women make up about 16% of the Engineering Industry. Worse yet, in the Land Surveying Industry, this number drops to 3%. Many firms do not even have a female on staff besides maybe a single receptionist.

This year, MSS Inc. is sending their Survey Dept. Manager to the Women Surveyors Summit, this department has been female lead for over three years now.

And, until recent staff changes, our Structural Engineering Dept. had been female lead for several years as well.

We also participate in an unofficial advisory group with the local college to provide a space for female engineering and surveying students to ask questions of women who are already in the field.

Join us in celebrating the women whose work has been lost to history, the women who were just 'calculators', they women who have broken the ceilings and pushed the boundaries in the industry so that others can follow, and the women who still are doing this today.

The PLSO OSU Student Chapter Survey Team has earned the opportunity to compete at the 2026 ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championships in Fairmont, West Virginia.

This is an incredible opportunity for these students to represent Oregon State University, the Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon, and the PNW's community on a national stage. To make this possible, they're are seeking funding for travel, lodging, registration, and competition expenses.

The total goal is $12,000; they've so far raised $3,500 which leaves $8,500 still needed.

Any contribution or sponsorship will directly support these students as they showcase their skills, connect with industry professionals, and help represent the future of surveying. Donors and sponsors who choose to support the team will be publicly recognized through their LinkedIn updates and, where appropriate, in surveying-related publications and professional acknowledgments. This recognition is our way of highlighting the organizations and individuals helping our students represent our team.

Today we attended the Chamber's Land, Labor and Capitol forum. We got to ask a hard question about the city's high fees and how we can help our clients choose Corvallis as the right place to invest in. Shout out to the Chamber for creating this space and to each of the panelists for making time for the community they serve and act within.

We were informed today that one of our founders has passed away.

We would like to share this below message from the PLSO, in loving memory of Robert Schultz.

Professor Robert J. Schultz passed away earlier this month. He was a legend in surveying education and practice, training a substantial portion of the surveying workforce in Oregon. He accomplished many things throughout his career. He is probably most well-known for his work establishing the survey procedures for the revolutionary Oregon Beach bill, which preserved public access to the beaches.

There will be a funeral mass Wednesday April 22nd at 11am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Corvallis, Oregon. There is a Livestream scheduled at ggl.link/Schultz-funeral. A reception will follow at the church social hall. A private family burial service will be held at a later time at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Corvallis, Oregon.
