Do you know there are more than 117 million people around the world who have been forced to leave their homes because of war, violence, persecution, or crisis? Every minute, 20 more people make that heartbreaking journey.

The United Nations created this day to recognize the courage, hardship and resilience of refugees; and to remind the rest of us that safety should never depend on where you were born, what you believe, or what you look like.

We're proud to play a small part in supporting refugee communities through our work with SunRise Studios Collective at Hope Studio, at Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp. Powered by solar energy, Hope Studio gives young refugees access to music recording, video production, permaculture education, phone charging, and the internet — tools for creativity, connection, and community.

Because everyone deserves light.

Through their 1% revenue commitment, OpenSolar helped bring solar power to Kaloko Clinic in Zambia. Thanks to this donation they now have reliable lighting, functioning medical equipment, vaccine refrigeration and a place where mothers can give birth safely. Lives are being saved.

Exciting news from Caguas, Puerto Rico! Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico just got a major solar upgrade — and it means their programs can keep running strong, no matter what happens with the island's power grid.

Thanks to a coalition of partners — Empowered by Light, Twende Solar, Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, SnapNrack, HomeGrid Batteries , Community Through Colors, and OneEnergy Renewables, and installed by GenEra, L3C — we added 44 540-watt photovoltaic panels and 18 4.8 kWh batteries to their existing system. The Centro de Apoyo Mutuo now runs on a total of 36 kW of solar power backed by 120 kWh of battery storage, giving them full energy independence for the first time.

That means programs like Super Solidario, a community supermarket, and Compras Solidarias, a monthly food support for 300 families, can keep feeding people without grid interruptions.

When the lights go out, Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico stays on. That's the power of community.
