In the 18th century, British doctor James Lind discovered that limes and other citrus fruits rich in vitamin C helped prevent this terrible disease. Since then, lime has always been carried on British ships and has played a role in Britain's maritime achievements. Moreover, English sailors even began to be called “Limeys”.
