How is over already?! I wanted to feature one more book so here we go: When the Drummers Were Women ~a Spiritual History of Rhythm by Layne Redmond covers an extensive research by Redmond on the history of frame drums, with thousands of documents showing that women were the primary drummers in sacred and cultural rituals for thousands of years. There is a video of her speaking about this book on YouTube ( https://youtube.com/) She is on PAS hall of fame, and the first female frame drummer to release a line of REMO signature drums. I really wish I could have met her!
Following my post from yesterday— here is another clip from our performance of ‘s Salsa Verde, the amazing ‘s solo in the middle of the piece. I’m so fortunate to make music with THE Queen of Marimba👑

Happy in Percussion! We all know has written countless pieces and has been a great leader and role model of the percussion community. Impressions on Wood, 10 Four-Mallet Marimba Solos for the Intermediate Marimbist, is my absolute favorite book to use in lessons (all of my students can confirm 😆). Take the words from Dr. Michael Gould: “(the book) has filled in a much-needed body of repertoire…These works introduce technical challenges while maintaining beautiful, lyrical melodies and form. It is nice to see a book that contains a logical and well-conceived pedagogical approach while adding to the marimba literature base.” Here is a short clip of “Salsa Verde” from this book, performed by .noise ( Jessica Cameron and myself). We love playing this piece💚
Thank you Julie for creating such a through, fun book in addition to so many works for percussion💖

Happy in Percussion! Little Lady with a Big Drum by Elayne Jones is an autobiography about her career as the first black female percussionist in major American orchestras. It is remarkable what she has accomplished, while facing many struggles and challenges— I can definitely relate to some of the frustrations even decades after her career. Truly an inspiring life story!

Happy in Percussion! The Art of Timpani Mallet-Making by Amy Stubbs is a must-have in every percussionist’s library. She has shared years of her mallet making expertise in one book— It is so thorough, well-organized, with pictures on every step of making mallets. Amy is also the creator of the world’s BEST triangle clip— I love it so much that it’s my IG profile picture 😆
Thank you Amy for sharing your craft!

Happy in Percussion! Duets for One 5-Octave Marimba by Sumiko Dohi and Mutsumi Tsuuzaki is a fantastic book for student and teacher. It’s great for developing sight reading, musicality, ensemble technique, and mallet technique. The illustrations are also very adorable. Here is a little excerpt of Duet No. 15 with we are getting ready to perform it this week!
