BLACK MEDICAL TRAILBLAZERS PART IV: DR. MAE JEMISON
Today, for the final installment of our Black History Month series, we are recognizing Dr. Mae Jemison.
"A determined student, Jemison received a scholarship to attend Stanford University at the age of just 16, where she studied degrees in chemical engineering and African and African-American studies. After graduating, she continued her education at Cornell University Medical College in New York, getting her medical degree in 1981, and later worked as a general practitioner, spending several years in the Peace Corps in West Africa. She also pursued graduate courses in engineering. Jemison applied to join NASA’s astronaut training program. She was one of 15 accepted out of around 2000 applicants in 1986." (https://www.newscientist.com/people/mae-jemison/)
Dr. Jemison was the first Black woman to go to space, doing so in 1992.
Dr. Jemison's drive and determination to do great things has inspired many and will continue to do so. She continues to be an advocate for women in the STEM field.
Thank you for following along as we have celebrated major leaders in healthcare throughout Black History. The individuals we have highlighted are just a few out of the many that have been part of the journey. We continue to celebrate these pioneers even after February, and thank them for their legacies.

BLACK MEDICAL TRAILBLAZERS PART III: JAMES MCCUNE SMITH
Today we are celebrating Dr. James McCune Smith, who made history for African Americans in many ways throughout his lifetime. Dr. Smith was the first African American to earn a medical degree. He sought this degree out from the University of Glasgow in the 1830's when he was unable to be admitted to an American university. Once achieving this major milestone, Dr. Smith then went on to open the first black-owned pharmacy in the United States in New York. His list of accomplishments is far longer than these two monumental moments in history, and we would like to take the time today to recognize this remarkable person.
Thank you, Dr. Smith, for your tenacity, drive, and advocacy for black medical professionals. Your legacy lives on. (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/james-mccune-smith-america-first-black-physician-180977110/)
Stay tuned for the fourth and final installment next week. Have a great day!

Today we are celebrating Dr. Rebecca Crumpler. The first African American woman in the U.S. to earn an M.D. degree. This was monumental for black women in healthcare. We are grateful to Dr. Crumpler for her perseverance and determination in completing her degree.
"Rebecca Lee Crumpler challenged the prejudice that prevented African Americans from pursuing careers in medicine to became the first African American woman in the United States to earn an M.D. degree, a distinction formerly credited to Rebecca Cole. Although little has survived to tell the story of Crumpler's life, she has secured her place in the historical record with her book of medical advice for women and children, published in 1883." FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
The theme of Black History Month 2022 is "Black Health and Wellness" and we are celebrating that with a 4-part series highlighting Black medical trailblazers that have paved the way for modern healthcare.
Our first pioneer that we are showcasing is Solomon Carter Fuller. Dr. Fuller was the first African-American psychiatrist in America, and was instrumental in the development of Alzheimer's research and publication.
"Dr. Fuller was the first to translate much of Alzheimer's pivotal work into English, including that of Auguste Deter, the first reported case of the disease. He published what is now recognized to be the first comprehensive review of Alzheimer's disease, in it reporting the ninth case ever described."
Alzheimer's and Dementia affects 1 in 9 individuals 65 and older. The work that Dr. Fuller has done for the research, development, and publication of these diseases is monumental and laid the foundation for further advancement.
Stay tuned for next week's feature, posting on 2/8!
