It's easy to get excited about spring planting, but remember that data shows our last freeze in Faulkner County usually occurs between April 1 and April 15. While some plants are cold tolerant and can handle light frost, many of our warm season vegetable and garden plants cannot handle any temperatures below 32 degrees F and some may be stunted by temperatures below 40 degrees F. Gardeners may want to wait until after April 15 to plant these warm season plants or be prepared to cover them temporarily during cold periods.

Pictured here is about 1/3 of the native seed harvested by farmers working with the Audubon Arkansas NATIVE Project in 2020. The plants that produced this bounty were originally sourced as seeds from naturally occurring populations growing in Arkansas' tallgrass prairies.
