People tend to make excuses for abuse because of a lot of things: stress, alcohol, trauma, anger, insecurity, jealousy, mental health struggles, relationship problems, or a difficult past.
Those things can help explain what someone is going through, but they don't make someone abusive. Many people deal with the same challenges and never choose to control, intimidate, manipulate, threaten, or hurt the people around them.
At some point, it's important to separate explanations from excuses. Understanding why someone behaves a certain way doesn't remove their responsibility for the choices they make.
Abuse isn't caused by stress or bad days. It's caused by someone choosing abusive behavior.

June is PTSD Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the lasting effects of trauma and the many people whose lives are impacted by it.
For survivors of domestic violence, trauma is often the result of repeated experiences of fear, control, intimidation, and abuse. Even after the abuse has ended, the effects can remain. PTSD may include symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, difficulty sleeping, and challenges with trust and relationships.
This month, we observe the strength and resilience of survivors while bringing attention to the realities of living with PTSD. By raising awareness and fostering compassionate, trauma-informed communities, we can help create spaces where survivors feel supported and understood.

When it comes to domestic violence, it is often portrayed as something visible: black eyes, broken bones, bruises. But for many survivors, the most damaging wounds are the ones no one can see.
It can be the partner who constantly criticizes or belittles you until your confidence disappears. It's isolation from family and friends, having your money monitored, every text questioned, every controlled decision. It's walking on eggshells, changing your behavior to avoid conflict, and living with a fear that becomes so normal you stop recognizing it.
Abuse is not always physical.
It can be emotional, psychological, financial, verbal, digital. At times it can be subtle, other times it can be gradual and hidden behind closed doors.
When we only look for visible signs, we miss countless people who are suffering in silence.
Domestic Violence isn't always what you see. Sometimes it is what you don't. Awareness begins when we understand that abuse takes many forms.

Leaving an abusive relationship is rarely as simple as walking away. Fear, isolation, finances, love, trauma, children, and safety all play a role. Instead of asking βWhy doesnβt she just leave?, ask 'How can I support her safely and without judgment?β
Compassion can make the difference between feeling trapped and finding a way out.
