The Whittemore School was the first publically funded school for Black students built in Horry County when it was established in 1870. It was named after Benjamin Whittemore, a minister turned Union Army chaplain turned Freedman’s Bureau official. After the original building was constructed, the school relocated several times before settling on U.S. Highway 378. Soon after, Whittemore High School became the first state-accredited African American high school in the county, and a new building was built in the 1950s when Equalization Schools were established. Whittemore was combined with Conway High School in 1970, but its name and legacy continues this Black History Month and beyond at Whittemore Park Middle School, which houses a legacy room dedicated to the school’s history.

SYRUP MAKING AT FREEWOODS FARM

HELP US MAKE SYRUP! November 6 through November 9, 2023. Work day begins at 8:00 am. First, Become A Stripper at Freewoods Farm! Help us strip Sugar Cane—every day, Monday through Thursday. Also, Come and See Syrup being made the old-fashioned way at Freewoods Farm—the mule pulls the cane mill round and round and the syrup being cooked in an opened kettle. Maggie will pull the mill.
Sugar Cane Grinding and Cooking Wednesday and Thursday, November 8 and 9. Call for additional information. Generally, No work on Saturdays and Sundays. HOWEVER, Work Sessions and Tours can be scheduled on Saturdays. This whole schedule is subject to weather condition.

Donation requested: Adults $5.00 each; Children 12 and under $3.00 each. Group tours can also be scheduled; call for group rates.

The association awards multiple scholarships annually to deserving students who are descendants of Whittemore High School alumni and graduates.
