After the Emancipation Proclamation, it took time for the decree of an end to slavery to come to fruition in Confederate controlled states. June 19, 1865 is the day that Union troops issued an order informing enslaved African Americans in Texas that they were free. Those freed people began celebrating Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially declared a federal holiday in recognition of this historic event.

Harvesting a crop is just the first step in food preservation.
Garden peas are usually planted so that they can be harvested in early spring or as late as early summer. Once harvested, you then need to shell the peas – removing them from the pod – and then rinse and either eat them fresh or can them so they can be eaten throughout the year.

The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Discovering Dave, Spirit Captured in Clay. Directed and produced by George Wingard and Mark Albertin and released through the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and Scrapbook Video, this film tells the story of David Drake, a slave potter from Edgefield, South Carolina. David was one of the first African American slaves to sign many of his works, which included jars and pitchers. In addition to producing thousands of pieces of pottery, David also wrote poetry.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 17th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Often, when we think about fossils the first thing that comes to mind are skeletal displays of dinosaurs or other long extinct animals. Fossils of bone, teeth, claws, or other parts of a once living organism are called body fossils, but that’s not the only fossil type that can be found! Three other types of fossils don’t have any parts of the original organism, but they can show us what was there at one time. Trace fossils, like footprints or burrows, show signs that organisms once traveled through these places. Mold fossils are the imprint of an organism, while cast fossils are formed when sediment fills one, like the inside of a shell for example. Check out some of the different examples of each of these fossil types and be sure to join us July 11th for the Shell and Fossil Show at the Horry County Museum from 9am to 4pm.
