If I’m not watching or reading horror, I’m immersed in true crime. As morbid as it is, I find it fascinating from a psychological standpoint. What causes a person to behave in such a way? It’s a reminder that monsters are real, and they are… well, us.

Throw in some cryptids, ancient evils, or a touch of the paranormal, and it becomes even more twisted.

Here are a few recs that are available in the shop right now!

🌲Headlights by CJ Leede: I haven’t read this one yet, but I have read Maeve Fly, and I know I will be reading everything I can get my hands on by Leede. This one follows a burnt out FBI agent who is drawn into a case where: “Seemingly innocent people are waking up on the side of the highway, with no memory of how they got there, wearing the skin of victims they’ve allegedly never met. And they each share one haunting detail: a strand of a stranger’s hair is tied around their tongue.” Need I say more?

🔍The Butcher and the Wren by Alaina Urquhart: A forensic pathologist becomes obsessed with a string of brutal murders, but as the doctor studies the victims, the killer leaves clues specifically for her, turning the investigation into a horrifying and personal game of cat and mouse.

📽️The Shoemaker’s Magician by Cynthia Pelayo: Paloma loves horror films and her homicide detective husband - who is investigating a series of gruesome murders that are connected to a lost silent film. As Paloma sleuths, she reveals a world of occult magic, the supernatural, and a mysterious horror host that puts her family in danger.

🫆The Outsider by Stephen King: This one begins with the murder of a child, so please be aware of that. As the investigation progresses, evidence stacks up against a small town’s beloved local teacher - however, other evidence suggests that his alibi checks out. How can the killer be in two places at once? {this was a five star read for me}

Which one is luring you into the shadows?

Happy Reading!

August begins tomorrow - it’s the last month of summer, and I honestly do hope the door hits it on the way out. Even so, it is bringing us some fabulous new horror releases, and here’s a little peek at what will be heading to Get Fictional in the coming weeks!

✨Ravenous by Sara Cooper: This one sounds completely unhinged, and I’m here for it. Influencer horror, consumerism, obsession with social media fame… what could go wrong?

🪾The Unknown by Riley Sager: This one has thriller and murder/mystery vibes with some paranormal thrown in on a creepy, isolated island. Séances gone wrong. Women gone missing. And events beginning to repeat themselves…

🖤Devil Inside by Clay McLeod Chapman: “A man who’s back from the dead meets a woman who’s from somewhere even worse in Clay McLeod Chapman’s new horrormance about love, possession, and just a little murder.” I don’t carry much romance here, but this one sounds GOOD!

🌲The Woods by Jessica Hamilton: This one sounds like it will be heart-breaking with elements of grief and loss. A fresh start goes wrong in a creepy home with a murderous past, and given what the poor family has already been through, it sounds like things are going to get even more intense.

⛰️The Unheld by Luke Larkin: “Startling monsters and occult oddities abound in this chilling horror Western as a girl journeys across the haunted Montana Territory to rescue her father from an otherworldly creature.” Nothing else needs to be said here, except yes, please.

👽 Them by W.H. Chizmar: Alien invasions and post-apocalyptic survival? This one blends science fiction with slow-burn horror.

Which one are you most excited for??

Stay spooky!
