When public education shifted after WWII, local Texas school trustees realized they couldn’t navigate changing state laws alone. In 1949, they created the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB)—a voluntary, non-profit organization designed to give local boards the tools, training, and legal support needed to serve their neighborhoods. It wasn’t created by politicians in Austin; it was created by local trustees, for local trustees.
Lately, critics have used misleading talking points to attack this network. Let’s look at the facts:
❌ THE MYTH: TASB is a "monopoly."
• THE REALITY: Membership is 100% voluntary. Districts are entirely free to hire private vendors or massive in-house teams for legal compliance and insurance. However, going solo is almost always significantly more expensive for taxpayers.
❌ THE MYTH: It "siphons" taxpayer dollars.
• THE REALITY: It acts as a taxpayer shield. By pooling resources with hundreds of other Texas districts, programs like BuyBoard leverage massive buying power to get huge discounts on school buses, fuel, and supplies. This saves millions that go straight back into classrooms and teacher pay.
❌ THE MYTH: It reduces local control.
• THE REALITY: Walking away from the table is what actually surrenders local control. TASB doesn’t dictate policy; it provides legal frameworks while leaving choices entirely up to our elected trustees. Leaving our voting seat vacant simply means our community has no voice when education decisions are made in Austin.
For over 75 years, the goal has been simple: keeping local communities—not state politicians or private entities—in control of our neighborhood public schools.

Texas teachers deserve fair pay, not gimmicks!
While I appreciate any effort to invest in educators, the Teacher Incentive Allotment rewards some teachers while leaving many others behind. Teachers don't educate children in isolation. Student success is the result of classroom teachers, special education teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, librarians, interventionists, and countless support staff working together every day.
The reality is that Texas continues to face teacher shortages, rising workloads, and districts struggling with budget deficits. Instead of creating winners and losers through incentive programs tied to evaluation systems, we should provide meaningful, across-the board salary increases for all educators and fully fund our public schools.
If Texas can find $750 million for incentive awards, Texas can find a way to ensure every educator earns a professional wage that reflects the value of the work they do every day.
Our teachers deserve respect, stability, and fair compensation, not a lottery system.
