In the summer, you should use the silver side facing outward (toward the sun). The reflective silver surface bounces sunlight and UV rays back through the glass before they can turn into heat inside your car.

In the winter, you should use the colored or dark fabric side facing outward (toward the windshield glass) and the silver side facing inside the car cabin if you want to help melt frost. The dark outer side absorbs the winter sunlight to help warm the windshield and prevent ice buildup, while the reflective silver side faces inward to trap that warmth inside.
