Just a reminder that while this is the season for giving, shopping and festivity please be mind full of what you click on in your emails and double check the URLs for the websites you are going to. While you are working hard to get the perfect gifts this season, hackers and scammers are working hard to get your information. Take these simple steps to help protect yourself.

1. Verify that an email is coming from who it says it is are coming from. If it says it is coming from grandma but the email address is [email protected] there is a 100% chance it is a scam.

2. Check that the website you are on is indeed the one you want to be on. Hackers take advantage of the fact people often mistype. So if you are trying to go to Amazon.com but mistype it and put in Anazon.com, chances are you will land on a page that looks like Amazon but it is just a phishing site.

3. This is the most important one. Put multi-factor authentication on all your accounts that contain any personal information. While you may not give out your passwords company's data bases get breached all the time and thus your username and passwords get out on to the dark web. If you have multi-factor authentication enabled on your account, the hackers will still not be able to access your information.

4. Buy the appropriate devices for your loved ones. If you are buying an elderly person or a child a new phone or tablet, buy it from Apple. iPhones and iPads are made with the less tech savvy person in mind and have built in features that make them less likely to be hacked. I absolutely love Android but if you don't know what you are doing, you can be easily compromised.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to email [email protected] or send a message on here. I would be more than happy to help.

Philips Hue 578807 Tap NAM White Dial Switch 09/18/2022

Philips Hue 578807 Tap NAM White Dial Switch

I have recently been testing out the new craze in smart buttons with a dial on them.

So far two have stood out. the Moes Smart K**b and the Philips Hue Dial Tap.

To start off the Moes Smart K**b is the cheaper option being only 25 dollars on Amazon. It has a smaller form factor with the dial and button being one thing on it. It comes with a small metal plate taht can be attached to any surface using the provided 3M tape. This allows the Smart K**b to be easily taken off so you can bring it with you.
The device stayed connected pretty well to my Home Assistant set up. Out of the few months I had it in use I can't really recall it not working when I pressed it. The button press itself work as they should but the dial function was less than desired. It worked but the system picked each turn as a one time button press. This did not create a smooth transition when trying to dim or brighten the lights. Also with the dial and the button being one piece is a big design flaw. Often when I go to press the button to turn the lights off, it would slightly turn the dial and this would cause the light to turn back on. Over all I liked it as button but the dial functionality was not to my liking.

Then Philips Hue came out with their Dial Tap. It has 4 individual buttons and the dial encircles those buttons making it separate. It comes with a false light switch plate that you can attach to your wall with 3M tape or screws. The remote itself is magnetic so you can remove it and take it with you. This device is twice the cost being 50 dollars. Each button can only do one function unlike the Moes that the button could do 3 separate action. However, the fact that there were 4 buttons negates this issue. The dial worked as one would expect a dial to work when dimming lights. The only real issues I have with it are that it seems to have issues with staying connected and the battery life seems to be draining rapidly. The connection issue may be because I have it working with a system it was not intended to. I have hooked it up directly to my Echo 4th gen's ZigBee hub but Alexa doesn't seem to be able to utilize any functionality at all. I have not tried it with Smartthings either as my hub is disconnected. So this may be just an issue with how I am using the Dial Tap. This may be the reason for the battery rapidly going down as well.

Overall, I do like both even with the issues they have. They provide a solid alternative to the yet to be released Flic Twist and are both cheaper. I will keep the Dial Tap and tinker some more with it to see if I can resolve the connectivity issues. Also the Moes Smart Know will be experimented with to see what all I can get it to do.

If you are interested in either of these products, I have links below to both.

Ring Stick Up Cam Plug-In HD security camera with two-way talk, Works with Alexa - White 09/10/2022

Ring Stick Up Cam Plug-In HD security camera with two-way talk, Works with Alexa - White

I have recently purchased a 3rd generation Ring Stick up Camera to replace one of my Wyze V3s.

I can say there are a lot of improvements from their previous models and it does a much better job than the Wyze camera did. That is expected because it is almost 3 times more than the Wyze camera.

It has very clear audio and picture, great night time picture quality, records when motion is detected, and can be powered by via battery.

If you are on a budget I still recommend Wyze cameras over this. It is hard to beat a solid camera with a 35 dollar price tag . However if you are looking to upgrade or want a more robust camera that wont break the bank I highly recommend this one.

HEPA Filter Air Purifier, Nicewell H13 Intelligent Wi-Fi Air Cleaner with Smart Air Quality Monitor, for Home Allergies, Pets, Smoke, Dust, Pollen, 24dB Quiet Air Fresheners with Alexa Control, White

In addition to the Govee air purifier I also have two others.

The first one is by a company called Levoit. I have a few of their their other products and seems this company mainly focuses on products for your well being. As far as their air filter goes there isn't much difference between it and the Govee one. Both clean the air pretty well and have a built in night light. I can highly recommend this one.

The second is one made by Nicewell. It has a square design instead of the round one of the other two. I feel this one can purify more volume than the other two due to its wide open intakes on the bottom. However, I do not think it's air is cleaner.
A feature I do like of this one that the others lack is a built in air quality indicator light and the app can tell you as well. I recommend this one if you are on a budget and want to improve the quality of your air.

Sengled Smart Plugs, Hub Required, Works with SmartThings and Amazon Echo with Built-in Hub, Voice Control with Alexa and Google Home, 15Amp Smart Socket, Work as Zigbee Repeater, ETL Listed, 2 Pack 07/07/2022

Sengled Smart Plugs, Hub Required, Works with SmartThings and Amazon Echo with Built-in Hub, Voice Control with Alexa and Google Home, 15Amp Smart Socket, Work as Zigbee Repeater, ETL Listed, 2 Pack

I’ve talked about smart bulbs and smart hubs in the past. Today I would like to talk about and review a few smart plugs.
I will start by saying what I look for in a plug. I like them to be responsive and compact. Meaning, I light my lights or other devices to turn on when I have programed them to and to be able to fit all my plugs in the same outlet.

With that being said, let’s look at the first plug I every bought. The Samsung Smart Plug V2. Honestly this monster of a thing is terrible. It’s this big round thick plug that is just ugly. It sticks out too far from the wall and blocks any other outlet. When turning on, it has this loud click.
The plug does use Zigbee and requires a hub. Specifically, the Samsung Smartthings (now Aeotec) Hub or a Home Assistant with a ZigBee adapter. Personally, I like Zigbee because it’s one less Wi-Fi device on my network, but it does require the extra cost of a hub. It also serves as a ZigBee router and an energy meter. It is very reliable; it has never randomly disconnected and has always turned on when I wanted it to. When this thing was still being made it cost around 30 dollars. Overall, it does the job and I still use it to this day I just hate the size of the thing.

The next plugs I purchased were the Tuya based smart plugs. They only cost 20 dollars for 4 at the time and were Wi-Fi. I picked these initially because of their price and because Tuya easily integrated with Home Assistant. They are a little slow to respond due to them being Wi-Fi plugs, and they don’t have any extra features, but they get the job done. For those starting out I would recommend these because they are simple, easy to set up and they are cheap. They only issue I had with them is they are big and can block some plugs from reaching an adjacent outlet.
Check them out if you are interested. Tuya https://amzn.to/3IpHQmi

The next two plugs I am going to lump together because they are basically the same. The only difference is one only works with Amazon. Those plugs are the Wyze and Amazon Wi-Fi plugs. They look identical and act the same. The Amazon branded one only works with or is seen by the Amazon ecosystem. They Wyze plug Is a little more universal. Both plugs have a rectangular shape which is great because they are stackable, and they do not block other outlet sockets. They are responsive and surprisingly the Amazon branded one is more reliable. I found the Wyze branded one’s seemed to randomly disconnect every so often. They are relatively inexpensive. I would recommend the Amazon branded one over the Wyze one for its reliability only if you are strictly in the Amazon eco system.
Links if you are interested. Wyze https://amzn.to/3atNwPk Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Rk1PXB

Lastly, are the Sengled Zigbee plugs. I honestly like Sengled products and their plugs are great. They are compact plugs with energy monitoring. They are also ZigBee routers, so they strengthen your ZigBee network. They are responsive and very reliable. These are the plugs I will be replacing all my other one’s with as reduce the amount of Wi-Fi device I have. (Which is 95 at the moment) They cost around 20 per unit if you buy the 2 pack, but 16.75 for the 4 pack. They do pair with the Amazon Echo 4th gen’s ZigBee hub, as well as Smartthings and Home Assistant.
Here is a link if you want to check them out. Sengled https://amzn.to/3ux3IX4

In closing, I would recommend all of these based on your needs but if I had to choose, I would pick the Sengled one if you have a ZigBee hub and the Wyze one because of its form factor and integrability. If you have a plug you absolutely love, I would like to hear about it and check it out.
Thank you and have a great day.

Not too long ago I had to replace my Ring Gen 1 doorbell. To be honest I was never impressed with it. The video quality was terrible. It had major delays when it came to seeing the videos or even answering when someone rang it. This also led me to start scrutinizing all Ring products. I began to favor Wyze over Ring because you got a lot for a low price. Ring was very lacking in features. So in my search for a new door bell I looked at review after review. I initially considered getting the Wyze doorbell but there were 2 reasons why I passed on it. First, the two way audio was terrible. Second, for what ever reason you can not talk through Wyze cameras on an Alexa device. This was a must for any doorbell I got. I then started to look at the Google Nest doorbell. Everything I read made this thing seem like the best of the best. However, again, the two way talk would not work with Alexa. So I reluctantly started to consider Ring as a solution. I began reading about the new version 4 and eventually I purchased it.
I was pleasantly surprised and it renewed my faith in Ring. The video quality on it is astounding. The two way talk is clear and crisp in the app and through an Alexa Echo. It's response time is greatly improved because Ring made it able to connect to the 5Ghz Wifi band. Everything that made me hate my Gen 1 doorbell was greatly improved with the 4. The battery is now a separate component that you can take out and charge instead of having to take the whole unit off the wall. I honestly could go on and on about how Ring improved upon their doorbell.
In closing, if you are in the market for your 1st doorbell or just a new one, I can highly recommend the new Ring Gen 4 one.
