🚩 RED FLAG WARNING

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of Contra Costa County from 11:00 PM Wednesday through 9:00 AM Thursday due to a combination of strong winds and low humidity.

These conditions create an environment where any spark can quickly ignite a fire and lead to rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior.

Safety Tips:
-Avoid activities that could create sparks, including welding, grinding, or using equipment in dry vegetation.
-Do not park vehicles on dry grass. Hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation.
-Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials, never toss them from a vehicle.
-Delay mowing or using string trimmers in dry grass during the warning period.

Vegetation Fire Near Somersville Road in Antioch- May 27, 2026

Just after 1:00 p.m., Contra Costa Fire responded to reports of a vegetation fire burning near Somersville Road in Antioch. Initial callers reported a small grass fire, with nearby work crews attempting to stop the fire’s spread.

The first arriving crews encountered approximately 1 acre of burning grass with moderate rate of spread on a slope, prompting additional resources including a dozer and helicopter response. Firefighters worked multiple flanks of the fire while navigating challenging terrain, drainage areas, and nearby power lines.

A second alarm was requested as crews established divisions for fire attack. Firefighters successfully contained the fire at approximately 5 acres, preventing further spread into nearby areas. Crews remained on scene for extensive mop-up operations due to hazardous conditions and downed power lines in the area.

No injuries or structure damages were reported.

The fire was determined to be accidental from someone performing w**d abatement work involving mowing equipment.

As temperatures rise and vegetation continues to dry out, Contra Costa Fire reminds the public to use extra caution when performing w**d abatement or yard work:
• Perform mowing and w**d cutting during the cooler morning hours whenever possible.
• Avoid mowing during hot, windy, or dry conditions.
• Keep a water source and shovel nearby while working.
• Inspect equipment regularly and ensure blades are not striking rocks or metal objects that can create sparks.
• Never leave equipment running unattended in dry grass.
