Back in the day, if you wanted something as a DJ, you had to build it yourself. No Technics, no proper mixers. Just a $200 mixer from RadioShack that took two years and a Shack card to pay off, $15 a month at a time. That's dedication.
Before social media, filling a venue meant hustle. This is how they did it: printing 300 posters, grabbing hammers and nails, and plastering corners from Crenshaw to Alameda. A true grind for those first few nights.
Starting an underground record label was tough, facing rejection everywhere. A lawyer's advice to start my own label led me to Duffy, who introduced me to Macola. This open door policy, unlike anywhere else, allowed independent artists like me to press records and build a nationwide distribution network. The only issue? Macola was forgetful with payments.
Before hip hop became its own genre, DJs in '80s LA spun everything: Top 40, funk, punk, new wave, pop. This wild mix forged the unique West Coast sound, blending Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, and Kraftwerk.
This was the spot where creativity flowed freely before N.W.A. even formed. A place where people could just be themselves.
Roger Craig and Uncle Jamm's Army's 'friendly feud' became the nitro that fueled the entire West Coast hip-hop scene. Discover how a DJ booking led to a legendary collaboration that made history.
