Riding on open roads means sharing space with cars, pedestrians, and other cyclists.

Here's what to keep in mind:
✅ Scan intersections early and don't assume drivers see you
✅ Ride in a straight, steady line as predictability builds trust on the road
✅ Hold your line, signal your intentions, and avoid sudden movements
✅ Keep your head up to look ahead for hazards, not just what's right in front of you
✅ Stay focused on the road and save conversations for the rest stops

Riding predictably and staying alert at intersections aren't just good habits — they're what keep you and everyone around you safe.

This Pride Month, we're spotlighting members of our Pelotonia community who show up, fully and completely, for every community they belong to.

Steve Newsome first joined Pelotonia as a Ride Weekend Volunteer. When the Trail Run/Hike was added in 2025 to Gravel Day, Steve was in. Now he is getting ready for his second year as a Gravel Day Runner — which includes training runs with Outrunners Columbus, an inclusive LGBTQ+ running club in central Ohio.

To him, Pelotonia most importantly means community.

“Pelotonia is a great community and honestly it is fun. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The party is one of the most fun in town and you will absolutely get out of it what you put in."

Mountain biking has been added to the Gravel Day experience, and Pelotonia CEO Joe Apgar took to the trails last week to try it firsthand alongside 18-Year Rider Ryan Hughes! 🚵

Ryan is executive director of COMBO - Central Ohio Mountain Biking Organization, a local group focused on creating, advocating, and preserving quality mountain biking in central Ohio — also a First-Year Peloton. Ryan has helped our team with the route planning for mountain biking at Gravel Day 2026, and COMBO has been a great supporter in recruiting those who love mountain biking to become part of the Pelotonia community.

The two new mountain biking routes at Gravel Day include 10 and 24-mile options, where Riders will experience the Baileys Trail System of world-class machine-built mountain biking trails including a mix of IMBA-rated green (“easy”) and blue (“more difficult”) trails.
