Rebecca Young was 12 years old when she designed a solar-powered heated blanket for homeless people.

TIME magazine just named her one of their Girls of the Year. She's now 13 and the blanket is in full production.

Let that timeline sit for a second.

At 11 she saw homeless people sleeping rough on the streets of Glasgow during freezing Scottish winters and decided she wanted to do something about it.

Her school asked students to design something that could solve a social problem. Most kids probably drew a diagram and called it a day.

Rebecca designed a backpack that unfolds into a heated blanket powered by solar panels. The panels charge during the day. The battery stores the energy.

At night the blanket keeps people warm using copper wiring and an automatic thermostat that conserves battery life based on temperature readings.

She entered the UK Primary Engineer competition against 70,000 other entries. She won.

Engineering firm Thales saw the design and partnered with her to build a real prototype.

They manufactured 30 blankets and distributed them to a homeless shelter in Glasgow. In October 2025 she was honored at Westminster with the British Citizen Youth Award.

In March 2026 the blanket moved into wider production through the Royal British Veterans Enterprise, assembled by veterans and people with disabilities, with one donated to charity for every one sold.

TIME named her one of their inaugural Girls of the Year. LEGO made her a minifigure.

She's 13.
