Best part about October? The amount of time I’m spending with repeat clients. There is something special about showing up to a family’s home (or neighborhood) for a session and being greeted like a long time friend. The kind where you can just pick up where you left off, skipping the warm-up small talk and jumping right into the memory making.

As Fall approaches and your feed fills with photos of families posed perfectly under orange trees or basking in golden light, here’s a gentle reminder: it’s absolutely OK if that’s not what you envision for your family.

Maybe you feel more at ease in your home, barefoot with a warm cup of coffee, surrounded by half-built Lego sets, snuggled on a well-loved couch.

Family photos are deeply personal. Others might not see the meaning or significance in your images, but that’s not what matters, is it?

So, as summer winds down and the urge to update your family photos grows, take a moment to reflect on the memories that have shaped your year. Now, think about where it feels most natural to capture that. The answer might just surprise you!

One of the concerns I hear from parents reaching out to me about family photos is related to the what-ifs… what if the kids didn’t cooperate? What if the weather was bad?

The fact of the matter is, family sessions aren’t always smooth sailing. More often than not, something goes differently than planned (thunderstorms and toddlers have their own agendas, you know?)

But honestly, those “imperfections” usually end up being the best part. The memories are still full and perfect in their own unique way.

So if you’re thinking about scheduling a session but worried things won’t go according to plan, you’re probably right… but you don’t need to worry.

Rolling with the punches is part of the job, and finding the beauty in your (imperfect) everyday is my secret superpower.

I always find joy in seeing which images my clients choose to print for their homes. This particular image almost didn’t make it into the gallery. Is it technically perfect? No. But I loved the moment, the silliness of it, and the way it perfectly embodied this family. I had a feeling they would love it too. When I saw this print order come through, I immediately texted my client to say how thrilled I was with her choice and how glad I was that I didn’t delete this photo. She told me it’s also her phone wallpaper. It just goes to show that even as seasoned photographers, sometimes we need to trust our gut over technical perfection. Ultimately, our jobs are about ensuring families feel something special when they look at their memories. It’s the greatest thing ❤️

One of the ways I ask my clients to prep ahead of their session is to think of a couple activities they’d like to do together. The activity doesn’t have to be complicated… You could read books together, garden, whip up a snack, or chill in a hammock. Whatever your family life looks like right now is exactly what we’ll capture together!
