This month the spotlight is on volunteer Mary Angela Miller! ⭐️
Mary first heard about VOICEcorps while reading (as many of our volunteers are apt to do 😁) . There was an article in Columbus Monthly talking about VOICEcorps that Mary ripped out and saved for when her workload slowed down. After entering retirement, she made the call.
Always having a passion for reading and literacy in general, it was an easy choice for Mary to decide to pick up the phone and join us as a volunteer. "Plus" she says, "I like voices. I think they reveal a lot about a person." 🗣
She continues to read not only for our VOICEcorps listeners, but in her free time as well. She loves reading so much , that she keeps a spreadsheet of everything she has read since the 1970's! Her favorite novel is Sleepers by Lorenzo Carcaterra- " I like stories where the bad guys get their due". She also enjoys children's literature, particularly the dark folk tale The Hobyahs. 📖
Outside of reading, Mary is a foodie and self-described "food safety nerd", having been the food service director for OSU Medical Center and a registered dietician. She is a current Ambassador for the International Mediterranean Diet Roundtable.🥗
We are so thankful for Mary and all of our wonderful volunteers! If you would like to join in helping those with low vision, no vision or other print-disabilities access vital information, click after the microphone to get started! 🎤 https://voicecorps.org/get-involved/volunteer/

Though it is not yet “technically” summer, it sure feels like it! 🌞
Protecting our eyes against the sun’s harmful rays is just as important as slathering on sunscreen to our face and bodies! Thankfully, there are many options to choose from, and this article provides a guide on how to narrow down the best shades for you. 🕶
Some things to consider: Plastic lenses are less likely to shatter, larger lenses will cover more area, and the most expensive ones on the market actually might not be the best (go figure! 🙄).
Tune in to VOICEcorps all summer long as our dedicated group of volunteers read newspapers, magazines, books, and other printed materials to those with low vision, no vision, and other print-disabilities.

When one’s vision starts to deteriorate, lifestyle changes are in order.
Cleveland Clinic ’s Dr. Ananth Sastry, MD specializes in Retina and Vitreous Diseases and wrote the article we are sharing today on how to modify one’s day-to-day life when experiencing visual changes and/or loss.
Here are a few standout things to consider:
1️⃣- Update lighting in your home to better suit your current needs.
2️⃣- Use ride-share and grocery delivery services as available where you live.
3️⃣- Make modern technology work for you! Voice-command devices such as Amazon’s Alexa can help you around your home, make phone calls, turn on and off lights, and so much more!
A tip we would like to offer is tuning in to VOICEcorps! 📻
You can tell your Alexa smart speaker to “Play VOICEcorps skill!”, or tune in via or website here ➡https://voicecorps.org/listen/
