As emergence progresses, Japanese beetles are expected to become a frequent topic of questions we will field. The adults feed between leaf veins, resulting in a skeletonized leaf.
Since their initial U.S. detection in New Jersey in 1916, Japanese beetle distribution has expanded steadily. In Ohio, the most persistent and damaging populations are concentrated east of a Cleveland–Cincinnati line. However, isolated grub populations continue to appear in well‑maintained turf areas west of this line.
Reach out to your local Extension office with questions about these beetles, including control options.

Spotted Lanternfly in Ohio | Early summer is when adult SLF start to appear. They go from egg masses to nymphs to adults in the span of 2-3 months.
These invasive insects are always the topic of lots of conversations and questions as the adults become more visible.
If you have specific questions about SLF in your community, contact your local Extension office.
More information about the SLF lifecycle can be found in the link in our comments:

*Ross County — Extension in Action*
Throughout Ohio, Extension professionals partner with thousands of community organizations to strengthen lives and livelihoods. And the team in Ross County is no exception.
Last year, our Extension staff in Ross County teamed up with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, to host a multi‑county, multi‑agency forestry education workshop for private landowners.
Participants learned hands‑on practices including controlled burns for grasslands and forests, native grassland establishment, property boundary marking, crop tree release, and more during this outreach event.

🌲 Did you know the Ponderosa pine helped inspire the way we design spacecraft heat shields?
It’s true. The tree’s uniquely layered bark gave engineers the idea for how to design a barrier that can withstand and dissipate extreme heat in space travel.
Ponderosa pines aren’t native to Ohio, but they are native to the United States. These giants typically live 300–500 years, and some have been known to survive for more than 1,000 years.
Learn more about these pines from our state forestry field specialist, Jim Downs, in the video linked in the comments below.
