This month, we are recommending Still Life with Bones by .hagerty ! Definitely add this one to your Goodreads Want to Read list--or do one better and put it on hold at your local library! Approaching forensic anthropological fieldwork from the perspective of a cultural anthropologist conducting an ethnography, this book is unlike anything we've ever read before. A top read of 2024.

Happy Halloween!!

Were you surprised by the answer? Due to her eating habits, KNM-ER 1808 got vitamin A poisoning... but was it because of HER eating habits or was someone out to get her? Do you think humans at this point in time were capable of poisoning someone? These are good questions to ponder on a halloween night, but be sure to comment your thoughts below!

Lady Hao's tomb was not only an fascinating archeological but a testament to an amazing life. Lady Has didn't let her status as a woman or consort stop her from becoming a formidable battle general. She an inspiration at the time, because even the King was asking her advice before and after her death.

Yesterday the Bloom Carroll Science Club took a tour of the Anthropology department and participated in various activities.

The got to see the inner workings of the archeology lab, biological anthropology lab, and learned about flint k napping. We also prepared a lab for them to explore people’s junk and draw up stories about each pile. Lastly, our forensic anthropology stations consisted of learning about human anatomy, faunal vs human bones, taphonomy, and types of skeletal trauma. To finish it up, they explored a crime scene and inferred what had happened to the victim.

Overall, it was a blast to host these bright scientists and we hope to see them again!

A different type of post today as we explore more recent events in human history. The Great Death Pit at Ur is a perfect example of conspicuous consumption. The Ancient Sumerians emphasized their wealth and status by buying large amounts of gold, animals, jewels, and most importantly- the ultimate sacrifice- humans. By discarding so much, they highlighted the excess of wealth, which signified their status.

Now that it's spring, it's the perfect time to read a book outside in the warm sun. This book takes you on the adventure of what defines humans- walking on 2 feet. What a better way to start off the new sunny season with this fascinating read!

If you end up reading it, be sure to tag us to let us know!

Happy Women's History Month!

APOP wants to take a moment to highlight the amazing and inspiring work of the women in the Anthropology Department. It's incredible to see the reach and variation they are capable of- from ethnography to archeology and even forensic anthropology!
