Father, husband, ODOT Press Secretary, recovering journalist, and Hoosier. This page belongs to me and is not a state agency page. Opinions are mine.

Dad, husband, Hoosier, punny, recovering radio news reporter. I don’t make decisions at the Ohio Department of Transportation, I talk about them.

Thanks to the Kountry Magic 4H Club for inviting me to share some information about ODOT. We talked about bicycle safety, distracted driving, and ODOT operations. Of course, there were questions about construction around the area. Really appreciated the questions and comments!

We’re as excited as anyone to flip traffic to the new pavement on Bridge Street, but let’s not jump the gun, folks.

ODOT personnel, vehicles, and equipment have been struck 60 times in 2026. The latest happened Thursday night. We are very lucky that everyone walked away. Here are the details from our partners at the Ohio State Highway Patrol:

Yesterday, June 11, at approximately 10:34 p.m., troopers from the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle property damage crash. The crash occurred on Interstate 75 near mile marker 62 in Vandalia, Montgomery County. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2017 Nissan Rogue, operated by Davon Atkins, 37, Piqua, was traveling north on Interstate 75. A 2013 International SA525, an Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) work zone safety truck with a sign board and truck-mounted attenuator, occupied by Bronson Stacy, 21, Clayton, was stopped in the left lane of travel for a maintenance operation. The Nissan rear-ended the International. The International’s overhead lights and sign board were active at the time of the crash.

Atkins and Stacy were both treated/cleared at the scene for possible injuries.

Atkins was found to be at fault for the crash. He was cited for Failure to Leave Assured Clear Distance Ahead (ACDA), Operating a Vehicle While Impaired by Alcohol and/or Drugs (OVI), and Operating a Vehicle While Impaired by Alcohol and/or Drugs High Tier Test.

Motorists are reminded that Ohio’s Move Over Law is a lifesaving law that requires motorists to cautiously shift over one lane – or slow down if changing lanes is not possible – when passing any vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the road. Move over laws now exist in all 50 states to protect everyone who works and travels on our roads. This law applies to vehicles with flashing lights of any color; including law enforcement, emergency responders, road construction, maintenance vehicles, utility crews and tow trucks.

This crash remains under investigation by the Dayton Post.
