Breed #12 / 100 — The Japanese Akita
The Japanese Akita is a breed that carries its history in every line of its silhouette. Originally bred in northern Japan as hunting and guarding dogs, Akitas were companions to samurai, protectors of homesteads, and symbols of loyalty long before the rest of the world knew their name.

They’re known for their cat‑like independence, their quiet watchfulness, and their ability to read a room before they ever step into it. Many Akitas carry classic traits of their heritage—alert guarding instincts, a strong sense of personal space, and a calm confidence that makes them feel larger than life. And yet, behind that stoic exterior, there’s often a playful, goofy side reserved only for the people they trust most.

Living with an Akita teaches you patience, respect, and partnership. They’re not a breed you “command”—they’re a breed you collaborate with. They thrive with owners who appreciate their intelligence, honor their boundaries, and understand that loyalty from an Akita is something earned, not assumed.

Whether they’re quietly observing the world from a favorite spot, trotting beside their person with that unmistakable bear‑like gait, or showing rare moments of softness, the Japanese Akita is a breed that leaves an impression. Powerful, thoughtful, and deeply loyal, they embody a kind of companionship that feels timeless.

Cleveland friends: I’ll be in the Chagrin area on July 2nd with limited photo sessions available. Perfect for getting your pup featured or capturing gorgeous summer portraits.

Breed #11 / 100 — The Belgian Laekenois

“I was drawn to the Belgian Laekenois for their eager‑to‑please, biddable nature. I wanted a dog who could go anywhere and do anything with me, and Phoenix has been exactly that. She’s devoted, adaptable, and always ready to try something new.”

Like many Laekenois, Phoenix has a strong sense of duty when it comes to her home. The breed was originally used to guard flax and linen fields, and Phoenix channels that heritage in her own way. She’s not a bite‑sports dog—she’s a lover through and through—but she takes her job as an alert dog seriously, announcing visitors with enthusiastic vocal flair.

And then there’s her most unexpected trait:
Phoenix is shockingly lazy for a Belgian. While many Laekenois buzz with energy, she’s perfectly content to lounge on the couch between her bursts of activity. It’s a quirk that makes her uniquely herself.

Living with a Laekenois has taught me how wide the breed’s temperament range can be. They’re not carbon copies of their Malinois cousins, and many don’t excel in bite sports. If you’re considering the breed, meet as many as you can and do your research—they’re wonderfully varied, sensitive, and not a one‑size‑fits‑all working dog.

Phoenix’s favorite “job” is the one that matters most:
She’s a medical alert service dog, happiest when she’s by my side, exploring new places, meeting new people, and being a positive ambassador for a rare and often misunderstood breed.

Scruffy, loyal, intuitive, and full of heart—Phoenix is everything I hoped for in a Laekenois and so much more."

Breed Feature — Cardigan Welsh Corgi

“I fell in love with Cardigans for their goofy personalities, perfect size, and elegant silhouette. They’re versatile little dogs—equally happy to lounge or hike miles—as long as they’re with you. Darwin fits the classic temperament with his quick wit and workmanlike attitude. We’re a team, and he thrives on that connection. He does differ in one adorable way: he chirps constantly, which makes sense since his mom’s name is Cricket.”

Darwin is a true all‑around worker. He earned his Trick Dog Performer title—about 30 tricks in a week—and has already started his scentwork career, earning his Novice Interior title. He’s also a multiple group‑winning Grand Champion and well on his way to his next CWCCA versatility level at just three years old.

One of his sweetest quirks is how he tends to injuries. If someone is hurt, he’ll find the exact spot and gently try to clean it, following dogs and humans alike to “nurse” them. It’s pure Cardigan heart.

His owner says Darwin has taught them patience, clarity, and the importance of responsible, ethical breeding. Their advice for anyone wanting a Cardigan: start with a breeder who is a member of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America—the best place to find dogs bred with the breed’s mind, body, and spirit in mind.

Darwin’s favorite thing? Anything, as long as it’s with his person—hiking, scent games, training, or just the next adventure together.

Breed #10 / 100 — The Belgian Groenendael (Sheepdog)

“I fell in love with the Groenendael long before I ever owned one. The loyalty, the drive, the sensitivity—every part of their personality pulled me in deeper. Belgians have always had my heart, but the Groenendael stole it completely the first time I saw one. They’re regal and elegant, yet somehow still goofy and funny in the best way.”

Ari is the definition of an all‑purpose farm dog. She’ll herd anything that moves, always mouth‑off, gliding in perfect circles around whatever has her attention. And of course, she has that classic Belgian quirk: snapping. It started as a demanding little begging behavior—so very Belgian—and eventually became a trick all its own.

One thing her owner has learned? These dogs are too smart. They predict what you want before you ask. Amazing when you’re practicing patterns… not so amazing when you’re trying to teach something new and they’re already four steps ahead on a different plan. A Groenendael is for someone who wants a dog that does everything with them—a true companion who sees themselves as an extension of you.

Fern’s favorite job is bikejoring. Running as fast and as hard as she wants under command connects her right back to her herding and message‑carrying roots. She’s a mover, effortless in harness, and she absolutely loves it.
