We network for all sorts of reasons. When we need something, when we want to build our relationships, to find new opportunities and so much more.

One key skill that many people don’t use is actively listening to the person they are networking with.

How do you interact with others at work or with your managers?

Many times we don’t talk about emotions or express our authentic selves at work for fear that if we’re vulnerable, our jobs may be on the line.

This is a form of protection and survival in the workplace.

This is especially true for military personnel and veterans. We worry that opening up may be seen as a weakness and our managers may not think we’re fit to serve the organization.

Sometimes the “go-ahead” to be vulnerable has to come from higher-ups and managers.
