The Art of Tile
Tile can make a huge difference in the aesthetics of any space. It seems simple, but it’s not. Installing tile properly is an art. The surface has to be prepared. The tile has to be cut and spaced properly. It takes math. Geometry. It’s critical that it be laid properly, so that it looks the way that it’s supposed to, and lasts. Do you want Chuck in a Truck (no offense to Chuck) to do it for the lowest bid? Please. It’s a choice about whether you want to create the best aesthetic appeal and increase the value of your home, or just get it done for cheap.
Floor Preparation
First of all, your subfloor needs to be level. Whether you are having old flooring torn out, or having new tile laid over old flooring, the surface needs to be properly prepared. You don’t just slap down new flooring, unless you want to walk over an uneven surface or “ouch” trip and fall.
Flooring preparation is 99% of the job. Proper preparation is key. The floor needs to be prepped and backerboard needs to be laid correctly before everything pretty can go in.
Tile Design
Do you have a vision for how you want your floor to look? A good contractor will ask you about how you want the tile designed. How do you want it spaced? Staggered? It’s not straightforward. It’s about how you want it to look. Communicate your vision, and a master tiler will follow and make your vision a reality.
Tile Cuts
Tile is not a DIY project. It takes the correct tools and very precise cutting. It takes a knowledge of geometry and an eye for the aesthetics of how the surface is supposed to look. The cuts must be spot on to create the look that you want.
The Final Product
The final product is your vision coming to life. You communicate it, and a master tiler makes it happen. He/she will ask to confirm clarity of your vision and make it a reality. Chuck in a Truck is going to just slap down tile and get it close to what it’s supposed to look like. Is that what you want? It’s your HOME. It’s an investment. The bottom line is that you can’t skimp on tile. Whether it’s a floor, wall, backsplash, or a shower, you need to have it installed correctly.
