In its 175-year history, Fort Moultrie has defended Charleston Harbor twice. The first time, on June 28, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the 30-smoothbore cannon of the original fort drove off a British fleet mounting 200 guns. Visitors can take guided tours or explore on their own, walking in the footsteps of Patriots who defended the fort in 1776, exploring cannon mounts and battery fortifications inside the fort, and walking paths outside the fort overlooking Charleston Harbor.

The New York Times published an article about Charleston and the Revolutionary War. This article features The Battle of Black Mingo kayak tour lead by guide Hasting Hensel as part of "A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative of the Georgetown County Library." Congratulations Georgetown County Library!
"A Glorious Cause" is made possible by an LSTA grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the South Carolina State Library.

We are happy to support the Johnsonville Public Library Summer Reading Program, thanks to our Youth Services Consultant, Anna Brannin!
Thanks so much to Anna Brannin of the South Carolina State Library who introduced the idea of print-making as a summer program and who kindly loaned us the gorgeous Triceratops and Pteranodon linocuts that she made for our tote bags. (It worked well on last summer's teen tie-dye shirt too! 🥸)
