Our board members don’t just help guide the work at Transitions. They roll up their sleeves and serve, too.
A big thank you to board members Mark Hocutt and Terry Davis, along with Transitions CEO Craig Currey, for serving lunch to our clients as part of our quarterly board member volunteer service.
We’re grateful for leaders who are willing to step out from around the board table and serve alongside our team.
Want to volunteer? It’s easy to get involved, and you can serve for as little as one hour!

A real treat on the menu this week. Chef Girard and the Harvest Hope team fired up the grill for our clients — steak, mashed potatoes, and squash — while the Smith Howard Advisory group rolled up their sleeves to volunteer over lunch. A good meal and good company go a long way on the journey home.

This past Saturday, Jacqueline Peagler and the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. rolled up their sleeves and served in the kitchen at Transitions Homeless Center — and for this group, it was not their first time showing up for our clients.
Last Christmas, Jacqueline and her team from the Fort Jackson Army Military Pay Office collected and donated care bags filled with shoes, socks, and warm items to residents at Transitions. Saturday was another chapter in what is becoming a beautiful tradition of service.
For the women of Zeta Phi Beta, whose pillars are Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood, this is not charity — it is a calling. And our clients feel the difference.
Thank you, Jacqueline, and thank you to the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta for continuing to show up for our neighbors in need.

Every month, Hammond School Service Learning Coordinator Anne Fowler brings students to Transitions to serve meals — and every time, something shifts.
“They always want to know how many people were fed, and they are always surprised at how many people receive a meal while they are there,” Anne says. “A lot of impact in a very short amount of time.”
For Anne, the goal goes beyond a single afternoon. She wants her students to become lifelong philanthropists — people who understand that giving back doesn’t require millions of dollars, just time and a heart to see others in need.
“My students don’t shy away from speaking to the clients. They always comment how nice the clients are and how appreciative they are. That is, unfortunately, not the way our society sees the unhoused.”
Serving a meal is an easy entry point. But for many of these students, it’s the beginning of something much bigger — a life of service that extends well beyond high school.

We were honored to join Eastminster Presbyterian Church Missions, Service & Benevolence Committee for their Ministry Dinner — an evening spent with some of Columbia's most committed partners in addressing homelessness.
Alongside representatives from The Cooperative Ministry , Promise of the Midlands , and Homeless No More , we shared updates on the work happening daily at Transitions — and were reminded of something important: no single organization ends homelessness alone.
As Lila Anna Sauls of Homeless No More put it so well, each of us holds a piece of the puzzle. Emergency shelter, transitional housing, family services, outreach, mental health, employment — it all works together to help men, women, and children find the stability they deserve.
We are grateful for Eastminster's faithful partnership and for an evening that reminded us why collaboration is at the heart of this work.

A huge thank you to the team at Heidelberg Materials for rolling up their sleeves and serving in the kitchen at Transitions Homeless Center! Volunteering alongside our residents is one of the most meaningful ways a company can invest in its community — and the research backs it up: hands-on service opportunities strengthen team bonds, boost morale, and improve employee retention.
We are proud to partner with companies like Heidelberg Materials that understand service is good for the soul and good for business. If your company is looking for a powerful way to engage your team, we'd love to have you.
