Ever wondered why you come to The Nick and we have subtitles on?
Open captions are written, on-screen display of a movie’s dialogue, speakers’ names, and sounds, which helps deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers enjoy the movie!
Our screenings include open captions every Tuesday evening and Saturday matinee, that way you know which showtimes have captions (whether you prefer to avoid them or take advantage).
Remember when you used to just... go to the movies? 🍿
No scrolling reviews.
No spending 30 minutes deciding what to watch.
You’d show up, pick a movie, and enjoy the experience.
In this clip from The Soda Citizen Podcast, Sumner Bender, Executive Director of The Nickelodeon, shares how The Nick brings back that feeling of simply enjoying a night at the movies.
But that’s just one small part of our conversation.
In the full episode, we go behind the scenes of Columbia’s beloved nonprofit theater from how movies are chosen and why some films can never be shown to the future of movie theaters, AI in Hollywood, film festivals, and why The Nick has become such an important part of Downtown Columbia.
Have you been to The Nick? What’s your favorite movie you’ve seen there or what’s one you’ll never forget? 👇

Join SC Stands with Ukraine at The Nickelodeon in downtown Columbia on Tuesday, September 1st at 6:30pm for a screaning of Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Ryan Smith's "Soldiers of Song," a documentary about Ukrainian musicians that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2024. Tickets are only $12 -- get yours quick at the link below! Following the film, the filmmaker will be joining for a virtual talkback. It has since screened at the Paris Olympics, the Warsaw International Film Festival, and the Ukrainian Museum in Chicago. Sean Penn called the film “The Ukrainian Spirit at its best.”
Ukrainian musicians of all genres, from metal to opera, transform their passion for music into devotion to their country in this moving documentary. Beginning on the very first day of the Russian invasion, Soldiers of Song documents how the lives of its cast of Ukrainian musicians have irrevocably changed and how they use their musical talents to support themselves and their communities.
Using shocking footage from the frontlines, this film reminds us not only of the ongoing tragedies that continue to happen during this war, but also of the resilience of Ukraine and its cultural forces. Here music functions not only to lift the spirits of the soldiers, but also as a cultural export to raise awareness of the war, a tool for raising humanitarian and military funds, and a valuable cultural artifact for everyday Ukrainians to rally around and protect. The musician’s commitment to their craft reminds us of the real power art has and the impact of beauty under catastrophic circumstances.
Soldiers of Song marks a continuation of Ryan’s previous acclaimed work, including the Emmy Award-winning NFL 360: Who If Not Us. This prior documentary followed a group of football players in Ukraine who, confronted with the turmoil of the Russian invasion, ensured their families’ safety and selflessly volunteered to join the military in defense of their country. This poignant storytelling captured the spirit of sacrifice and determination amidst adversity, a theme resonating throughout Ryan’s filmmaking journey.
