Wishing all our Japanese colleagues at Shimadzu and Shimadzu Scientific Instruments a peaceful Obon! 良いお盆をお迎えください

Obon 2026 is celebrated from August 13 to 16 in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, with a duration of 3 days. In other regions, the festival date may be slightly different.

Obon is one of Japan's most important festivals and is celebrated over 3 days in mid-August or July depending on the region. During this time, Japanese people pay respect to their ancestors and loved ones who have passed away through many beautiful ceremonies.

Obon, sometimes just called Bon, is a Buddhist festival that celebrates the time when the spirits can return to Earth and be with their families.

This is a large family holiday, and many Japanese people will travel to their family homes, clean the graves of ancestors, and leave offerings at Buddhist shrines. Although Obon is not a public holiday in Japan, most people take a few days off to celebrate.

Tanabata is a Japanese festival about hope, wishes, and a legendary love story. People hang wishes on bamboo because Tanabata is a festival of hope. The bamboo symbolizes carrying those wishes toward the heavens, making it a beautiful way to express dreams and aspirations while celebrating the Star Festival.

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments celebrated Tanabata by bringing our team together to enjoy traditional Japanese treats and share our wishes on an artificial bamboo tree. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Japanese culture, strengthen connections, and enjoy a fun team-building activity with colleagues across the organization. We are grateful to everyone who participated and helped make the celebration so memorable.

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments recognizes and celebrates Pride Month. Pride Month serves multiple purposes: it celebrates LGBTQ+ culture and achievements, raises awareness of ongoing social and legal challenges, and honors the lives lost to violence and the AIDS crisis.

It is both a festive celebration and a form of protest, emphasizing visibility, equality, and community solidarity. The rainbow flag, created by Gilbert Baker, is the universal symbol of LGBTQ+ pride, representing diversity and inclusion.
