Tony Poli, US Navy, driving a landing craft full of soldiers onto Omaha Beach on D-day, June 6th 1944.
This photo was taken by a Time magazine photographer on Omaha Beach and published in Time Magazine.
The landing craft sank shortly afterwards after being overturned by a German cannon shell that landed right beside it.
Tony went into the water and was listed as missing in action for a week, but was actually recovered by a British ship.
Tony was Joe's stepdad and spent the last 45 years of his life with Joe's mom.
He was a very kind, gentle man and he passed away a few years ago.
