National Hamburger Day is an unofficial holiday created by unknown food enthusiasts to honor America's favorite sandwich. It is celebrated annually on May 28, timed perfectly to kick off the summer grilling season immediately following Memorial Day.

The hamburger itself has a deeply disputed origin, with several towns and chefs claiming the invention.Early roots: German immigrants introduced "Hamburg steak" (minced meat patties) to the U.S. in the 1800s.

The sandwich is born: The exact first person to put this patty between bread is heavily debated, with stories pointing to vendors at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, Louis Lassen of Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, and the Menches brothers of Akron, Ohio.

National explosion: The food's popularity was skyrocketed by the opening of the first White Castle in 1921, which cemented the burger as a fast-food staple.
