Integrative Pediatrics
Integrative Pediatrics, Where Children's Wellness Matters Most.
🩺As integrative pediatric providers, we also ask an important question: “Could there be underlying biological factors affecting a child’s ability to develop language?”
•
•
While many children simply benefit from developmental support and therapy, there are times when medical factors may contribute to communication challenges.
•
Some areas that may warrant further evaluation include:
🔹 Iron deficiency and micronutrient deficiencies
Iron, zinc, vitamin D, Omega 3 and other nutrients play important roles in brain development, attention, learning, and language acquisition. Children with selective eating patterns may be at higher risk for nutritional gaps.
🔹 Gut health and nutrient absorption
The gut and brain communicate constantly. Chronic gastrointestinal inflammation, dysbiosis, or digestive dysfunction may impact nutrient absorption and overall neurological health.
🔹 Sleep disorders
Children who are not getting restorative sleep may struggle with learning, attention, memory, and language development.
🔹 Hearing concerns
Even subtle hearing deficits can affect speech and language acquisition.
🔹 Cerebral folate deficiency
A small subset of children may have difficulty transporting folate into the brain due to folate receptor alpha autoantibodies. This condition has been associated with developmental and language challenges and may be identified through specialized testing.
🔹 Underlying neurological or developmental differences
Every child develops differently, and sometimes speech delays are part of a broader neurodevelopmental profile that deserves comprehensive support.
•
•
🧩At the end of the day, speech therapy remains a cornerstone of treatment, but understanding the “why” behind a child’s challenges can sometimes help us better support their progress.
•
‼️Our goal is never to replace therapy—it’s to help optimize the biology that supports learning, communication, and development.
•
🗣️Always speak with your pediatrician or healthcare provider before starting supplements, medications, or new therapies.

💡 What is wastewater surveillance?
•
•
Public health experts can test community wastewater (sewage) for viruses like norovirus. Because infected individuals shed the virus in their stool—even before they know they’re sick and after symptoms improve—wastewater monitoring can help identify increased community spread before all cases are reported. Think of it as a “community thermometer” that helps track how much illness is circulating.
•
Norovirus is highly contagious and can spread rapidly through households, schools, daycares, camps, and other group settings. In fact, it takes only a tiny amount of the virus to cause infection.
•
Common symptoms include:
🤢 Sudden vomiting
💩 Diarrhea
🤕 Stomach cramps
🤒 Nausea and sometimes fever
•
Symptoms usually begin 12–48 hours after exposure and last 1–3 days.
•
💧 The biggest concern for children is dehydration. Contact your healthcare provider if your child is unable to keep fluids down, has decreased urination, significant lethargy, or other signs of dehydration.
•
🛑 How to Stop the Spread:
✔ Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom and before eating or preparing food.
✔ Remember: Hand sanitizer is NOT as effective against norovirus.
✔ Disinfect contaminated surfaces with a bleach-based cleaner.
✔ Wash soiled clothing and bedding on the longest wash cycle and dry on high heat.
✔ Keep sick children home until they have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours.
•
•
Supporting recovery with plenty of fluids, electrolytes, rest, and simple nourishing foods as tolerated can help children recover more comfortably.
•
Stay healthy and keep washing those hands!

🌻Tick Season Tips From a Pediatric NP + Mom of 6 🌻
Hi friends! My name is Kaylan, and I’m a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner and a mom to six busy kiddos. We live out in the country, so tick bites are something we encounter pretty frequently around our home. 🕷️🌾
Over the years, I’ve learned a few simple habits that help keep my family safer while still enjoying the outdoors, and I wanted to share them with you! 🤍
✔️ Wear light-colored clothing when outdoors so ticks are easier to spot
✔️ Use natural tick repellents when appropriate
✔️ Tuck pants into socks during hikes or tall grass play
✔️ Do full-body tick checks after outdoor activities
✔️ Shower and change clothes after being outside
✔️ Don’t forget to check hidden areas like behind ears, scalp, armpits, groin, and behind knees
If you DO find a tick:
🩺 Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin
🩺 Pull upward steadily without twisting
🩺 Clean the area well with soap and water
🩺 Monitor for fever, rash, fatigue, joint pain, or flu-like symptoms over the next several weeks
📞 Call your healthcare provider if:
• The tick was attached for an extended period of time
• The tick appears engorged
• A rash or symptoms develop
• You live in or traveled to an area with Lyme disease risk
Ticks can sound scary, but with prevention and early awareness, most bites can be managed safely. We hope these tips help your family enjoy the outdoors with a little more confidence this season! ☀️

There’s something special about growing your own food 🌱💚
•
•
🩺One of our amazing NPs, Kaylan, has been spending time tending her summer garden — growing fresh vegetables, herbs, and nourishing foods right at home! Gardening is such a wonderful way to connect kids with nature, encourage healthy eating habits, and enjoy foods rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
•
🫑🌶️Whenever possible, choosing homegrown or pesticide-free produce can help reduce exposure to unnecessary chemicals while supporting a healthier gut and overall wellness. Plus, fiber-rich foods help support digestion, immunity, and growing bodies!

We’d love to hear from our families:
🌿 What are you growing this summer?
🍅 Any favorite garden veggies or herbs your kids love?
🥒 Have your little ones helped in the garden yet?

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. ❤️🤍💙
At Integrative Pediatrics, we are deeply grateful for the sacrifices made by military families—past and present. As we enjoy time with loved ones this Memorial Day, may we also take a moment to reflect on the courage, service, and freedom we often take for granted.
Wishing your family a safe, meaningful, and peaceful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸
☀️When choosing a “non-toxic” sunscreen for kids, the biggest things to look for are mineral-based protection, zinc oxide as the active ingredient, fragrance-free formulas, and avoiding ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and octocrylene. Mineral sunscreens are generally preferred for sensitive pediatric skin because they sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed.

‼️Great options that we love: Blue Lizard, Think Baby Clear Zinc, Blue Lizard Sensitive, ThinkSport Kids all Mineral Spray!

👏🏼👏🏼Research what is best for your child + pay attention to ingredients!
Tiny babies, chunky thighs,
Every shape is a sweet surprise 💛

Healthy comes in every size alive.

🩺As pediatric providers, here’s what we truly see:
It’s not the number — it’s consistency.
A baby following their own curve with steady gain,
Is usually growing beautifully just the same
Typical infant weight gain:
👶 0–4 months: ~25–35 grams/day
👶 4–8 months: ~15–20 grams/day
👶 8–12 months: ~10–15 grams/day
Some babies are squishy, some babies are slim,
And neither tells us how loved they’ve been.
So whether your little one is petite or “Chucky” strong,
There’s room for every baby to happily belong 🤍
We love the rolls, the cheeks, the tiny skinny legs too —
Healthy growth looks different for each little you.

👋🏼Hi, I am Kaylan and I have been a nurse for 16 years, with the last 10 years spent in the pediatric ER and urgent care setting. For the past 8 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a pediatric nurse practitioner, and I’m incredibly grateful that the Lord has led me to Integrative Pediatrics—where I can care for children in a more whole and personalized way.
I earned my doctorate from the University of Tennessee, and I continue to feel honored every day to do work that truly fills my heart.
•
•
🤍Outside of work, I’m a wife of 16 years and a mom to SIX amazing children—three boys and three girls, ranging from 15 years old down to my youngest who just turned one. Life is full, busy, and beautifully chaotic.
Being a mom has deepened my love for what I do. I truly care for each of my patients as if they were my own, and it’s a privilege to walk alongside families in their health journeys.
In the rare moments of “free time” (what even is that?), I enjoy reading, being outdoors, crafting (cross-stitch, crocheting, sewing), and recently started a garden—I’m so excited to grow our own fruits and vegetables this year!
•
🧩I am truly honored to be able to care for your sweet children and thank you for trusting me with their health and wellness! Happy Nurses Week to all the incredible nurses who give so much of themselves every single day. 💙
