ReString Appalachia
Instrument relief nonprofit getting instruments back in the hands of disaster survivors ❤️🪕

For the last 4 months, we’ve been taking in applications, vetting, communicating, acquiring instrument and gear, fundraising, coordinating shipping and logistics to bring musical aid to Jamaican musicians whose lives and careers were hit by Hurricane Melissa last October.
Somehow, we made it happen internationally for the first time, and boy did we learn a lot. This would not have been possible without our partners:
We are so grateful to be in this position and help musicians. More to share over the coming weeks about this trip 🇯🇲

Meet Charlise, one of our instrument recipients affected by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina.
Charlise grew up in South Carolina, and music has been part of her life since elementary school. "I went through an arts program, starting with violin, then cello - but found my love for the double bass. I have been part of the SC Allstate and regional Charleston orchestra playing bass in high school (2012-16) eventually becoming part of jazz band... music has been my escape since forever."
After high school, Charlise pivoted to a career in healthcare, but always kept her love of music. It was her healthcare role that brought her to Asheville, where she was living when Helene hit. After the storm, Charlise found her home flooded and covered in mud.
"When I saw the mud on my bass and electric guitar I didn’t want anything to do with music anymore," says Charlise. "I couldn’t even find the will to bring it out after seeing the damage done... but now I miss it a year later."
Charlise, now living in Charleston after being displaced by the flood, reached out to us with her story last fall. Of course, we wanted to help - and so did our partners at Krutz Strings. We sent Charlise a bass and electric guitar, and soon she'll receive a new cello from Krutz as well.
Charlise says these instruments will help her rebuild the love for music that she lost - and we think her smile says it all. This is why we're here. ❤️

If you're new here, welcome! And if you've been around for awhile, thank you. Either way, as ReString Appalachia continues to grow, we think it's so important to continue sharing the story of how we got started.
We are an instrument relief nonprofit whose mission is to give free, quality instruments to those who lose them from natural disasters. Our initiative began in western North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This is a clip from a feature on CBS Saturday Morning in 2025 highlighting some of our instrument recipients.
Since then, we've delivered more than 900 instruments (and counting!) to victims in 5 disaster zones, gotten our 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation, and raised more than $275,000 to support our instrument relief mission. And this is just the beginning. To learn more about our initiative and how you can get involved, visit us online at restringappalachia.org!
