UAF Engineering Building Project
This new facility will be 119,000 gross square feet and will have 5 floors to support more graduating engineering students.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks is seeking proposals from artists and/or artist teams for the permanent installation of public art for the Engineering Learning and Innovation Facility located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, Fairbanks, Alaska.
The Engineering Learning and Innovation Facility is a 120,000 square-foot multi-story engineering research and teaching facility. The building houses multiple large laboratories, student maker-spaces, extreme environmental cold-rooms, and classrooms used in learning and discoveries related to all disciplines of engineering. The facility is home to the College of Engineering and Mines and the Institute of Northern Engineering. Included in the building are programs such as the Space Systems Engineering Lab and the Alaska Center for Energy and Power. The building is located on the far eastern side of campus near the UAF Cornerstone, on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.
There are four areas in the building that have been selected as locations for new art work incorporated under this request for proposals.
● Location One is a large brow above a transom window and below a window wall in the clerestory opening between Level 3 and 4. The wall is about 40-feet long and 4-feet tall and is currently painted sheetrock.
● Location Two is a series of open spaces contained within the structural steel that frames a wall on the north side of the Usibelli Coal Mine Student Study Atrium. The wall is clad with acoustical panels and features multiple triangular-shaped openings.
● Location Three is located on the east wall of the corridor outside of the Schaible Auditorium. This location is currently a painted sheetrock wall and the area for artwork will be subject to contact due to its height. Any piece mounted there must be durable and appropriate for the location.
● Location Four is located on the south wall outside classroom 301/305. This location is currently a painted sheetrock wall and the area for artwork will be subject to contact due to its height. Any piece mounted there must be durable and appropriate for the location.

The building is monitored for movement by 7 new seismic sensors that detect motion in all three axis. On the night of November 7th, the building recorded the an event that registered 3.7 in magnitude located just 18 miles from campus. Below is a snapshot of the data the sensors caught during the shake. The sensors, provided through a grant with the Alaska Earthquake Center , will give structural engineers a glimpse at building reactions and movement. The data will be used to improve the survivability of future structures and hopefully prevent devastating loss of life.

For anyone curious about the power production of the 15kW solar array on the facility, here is a handy link to the system performance data. The solar array was a student funded initiative and part of our commitment to Engineering on Display.

The little things make great spaces. What was a wasted space above the brace knife plate has been transformed into a beautiful table in the machine shop entry where students can pick up their assignments, showcase their projects, and keep their water bottles. Thanks to the local craftsmanship of DreamWorks Cabinetry!!
