Foundry Montessori School
A Montessori school serving children ages 2-6 years old, in the heart of the village of Cold Spring
At the Foundry, we’ve used Montessori principles to design a school which meets the needs of children at every developmental stage, while simultaneously dedicating a large part of the day to exploring nature and the outdoors.

What’s better than pint sized pirates hauling the sail on “the boat that saved the river” Pete Seeger’s Sloop Clearwater… learning about the river, the fish in the river and the parts of the boat and some good ole sea shanties while we’re at it! Thank you !

The magic of the Montessori mixed age!!! 3 year old wanders over while a 5 year old finishes up the culmination of a big math work counting short chains to the square of each number 1-10. The three year old not only watches, but counts alongside and is completely engaged for over a half hour. The five year old patiently involves him by showing him what he’s doing and sending him to fetch various pieces of the work that he needs. Their joy at the end after finishing is far more than if either one had worked alone! And you can bet that 3 year old will be more than ready for this math lesson when the time comes!!!
A Montessori teacher looks for sensitive periods in a child’s development. This child is in the sensitive period for learning to write.
“During a sensitive period, children are often intrinsically motivated to engage in activities, and they may exhibit spontaneous concentration.” A Montessori teacher is trained to recognize when a child is in those sensitive periods and offer activities to help them perfect the skill they are working on developing. This makes learning joyful and never a chore.
