I submitted the first draft to my agent!

I cried almost every time I sat down to write this memoir on Korean architecture because reading Korean (for research) took too long and unearthing tough times were too painful.
I’m sure there will be countless revisions, but I feel much lighter already. I conquered that “mission impossible.” Sample chapters are available on www.jleehartford.com.
Thank you, Moon Hoon , for the beautiful quote.

Remembering those who laid down their lives for March 1st, 1919 Korean Independence movement.

My writing view from our second floor addition. What a difference a story higher and years of perseverance make. My memoir on Korean architecture and the renovation of this fixer-upper are almost done. And how funny it is to be writing about Korea while staring across the Hudson Highlands. World apart yet so close. Thank you, James and our team for your patience. (Railing design by James Hartford and Amadou Cisse - inspired by neighboring mulberry tree leaves)

Kim Man-deok

Born on Jeju Island during the Joseon Dynasty, Kim Man-deok (1739–1812) rose from orphanhood, poverty, and servitude to become one of Korea’s most successful merchants in a male-dominated Neo-Confucius society. Having risen against all odds, her enduring legacy was shaped during a national crisis.

When a devastating famine struck Jeju in 1794, Kim Man-deok used nearly all her wealth to buy rice and save her neighbors, asking for nothing in return. Her selfless act saved thousands of lives and defined a pivotal moment in Jeju’s history.

Her selfless act earned recognition from the king who granted her wish to visit the mainland and visit Mt. Geumgang. This was beyond extraordinary event since the residents of this place of exile were not allowed to leave the island.

As my family took root in Jeju due to exile, this story couldn’t resonate with me deeper.
Her story reflects the tenacious spirit of Jeju: resilience, generosity, and care for the community. There is much to learn about this tiny island, now a place of healing.

With gratitude for sharing her inspirational story.

Inadvertently, I spent the Mother’s Day by myself having tiramisu and cappuccino for breakfast and writing by a canal in Venice. (Revised book proposal due in a week!) My cafe neighbor helped me capture this funny moment. They said, “Let’s wait for the Gondola to come behind you.” But, it never arrived until they were gone. We had such a lovely conversation while we waited.
